New Unused Tiles/Sprites! « [Closed] M3 Gameplay Help « Forum

Yep, so I was bored one day and decided to look around with VBA's tile viewer. I was in the room right before the Memory River, the long hallway that plays the Mother 1 title theme, and I discovered a few things. These things:

(I guessed on which pallets to use.)

I assume these were originally to be used in the Memory River scene, but they decided to use the original Mother 2 sprites instead. I wonder if there are more of these tiles hiding in the game somewhere... Anyone else found anything like these?

Oh boy! I found some more with the help of a tile editor! These are interesting...

A larger drawn version of the above (Missing some feet stuff)

I think those last two might have actually been made by Itoi, which is one of the reasons why they don't look like they fit in. Especially the Masked Miss Piggy thing, because it looks like this other pig scribbles.

EDIT: Also, the pig sprite (the big one I mean) looks like a battle sprite ,but it's way too big. I wonder why....?

I remember the unused Bear Sprite, a Tree Enemy, and a different palette of the Submarine Pig, but these are much more interesting!

And LeChimp, that was actually my first thought too. If WAS supposed to be the Masked Man, it was probably the old version from N64. Pretty much everyone looks freakier on there, intentional or not, so if they had used that design it wouldn't have looked so... stupid. Heheh

Like, that Picky like guy in NPC that never flat out says it? Maybe it was originally a more obvious in writing less obvious in appearance thing, like with a line "I'll make my brother proud!" or something.

Eh, it was always pretty much a given that those 'alternate final battle' backgrounds were genuinely in the data somewhere. Maybe I should actually talk about them some time.

Now this new PigMask drawing. In a light-hearted way it's consistent enough with how Pokey theoretically might have cared to dress up the toy robot commander of his army, but it probably isn't a representation of any design that was seriously considered for the Masked Man at any point in development. More likely just a fun little thing that the programmers saw fit to hide in the data.

The Hinawa sprites, though. Taken with some of the other unused data, it does seem like it took Itoi a while after resuming development to ultimately settle on an all-around more subtle approach to the game's drama. A number of interesting concepts seem to have been cut for that purpose, but they seem to have been deemed acceptable costs for the sake of honing such a perfectly-balanced game scenario and timeless storyline.

Let us know whereabouts you're finding these sprites then, to put them in perspective and in case anyone else cares to join your hunt. And I noticed some kind of wide golden pig table/ornament amongst the tile set for the Empire Porky Building's lobby, if anyone cares to retrieve that.

Ah, and that Picky-looking villager most likely is Pokey's brother, one of several 'hidden' returning characters. His status as the organizer of the village's messenger/mail system is the inherent irony that hits that concept home. Also notable for having a somewhat strange hobby of carving vaguely Clayman-like wooden dolls, which doesn't seem to be of any relevance following the timeskip.

I think that this is the case, why you ask? Mostly because of this:
I found one with sunglasses

I also found some other things:
A big Lucas from that video
(I also found more of the sprites from the video, but can't find a suitable pallet for them, so bear with me.)
A big ol' creepy clayman
(I know that's not the right pallet, but its the best one I could use.)
Some assorted sprites
(These include Duster with a pig helmet (There are some walking animations etc of this too), BOW!, and HAPPY END)
Some blob things
(They look like they say something, but I can't read Japanese - if they are saying anything at all. They appear all over the place in the data.)
And "Mother 3 Sound Moniter"
(I just thought this was interesting)

And if you'd like to take a look for yourself, this set of ranges (From this topic) may come in handy. And this is the tile editor/viewer I've been using. You'll have to load the pallet data from a VBA save state, at least, that's what I did. If you guys have trouble with it, I'll make a little guide or something.

The blob things are saying "I'M A DUMMY", dummy being in the debugging sense. They appear to be Dragon Quest slimes possibly Shocked

BTW, if possible, could you list the addresses for this stuff? It'd be nice to have for the translation, not to mention if we wind up really low on space we could always use this stuff that's never used Wink

I found the Pokey dieing sprites in my Save state. I also found these Bunnies that I don't remember seeing in Mother 3. They look like the bunnies you see in Mother 2, the ones blocking the entrance to the cave in Dalaam.

Not to rain on your parade or anything but, I went to the address of the bunnies, those are actually Fuel's sprites when he's covered in soot. And the red indestructible machine may be a result of using the wrong pallet, there are a lot of things I can't find good pallets for from the save state.

Also, it may help to change the Browser size - it makes things easier to see and can line things up.

Oh yeah, if you want to check out the stuff from the freaky battles, go to this address, 31571480, and change the offset to 24 and make the browser width 32 for best viewing.

Yeah I had a feeling it wasn't anything special, It hit me when I saw that Lucas had Gray hair and then I realized it wasn't anything. Still this is a really fun tool to mess around with.

The full one is the first sprite that was shown in the video...To me it looks like some crazy version of the masked man with a flaming head or something. o.o; The other one (I couldn't get the whole thing because my tile editor wasn't responding) is pretty much the same thing, but it wasn't shown in the video. It looked to me like the flaming guy with wings...

Gah! Don't save pictures as .JPGs! They screw up the quality of the picture and kill babies!
the first picture actually i think could show the extent to How much of him had to be repaired, i mean, it looks like a jumble of mechanical parts and Organic parts. i just didn't think it was quite right when i looked at the Battle sprite of MM after he took off his helmet and no injuries were visible to his face and head, it just seemed unusual as to why he was wearing a helmet in the first place. that sprite would've shown that parts of his head had to be totally reconstructed (namely by his right eye) And the helmet hid the damaged parts of his face, at least giving hikm a slight reason to have it.

How very interesting! I really like the Hinawa ones, they're kinda mysterious. Maybe she was going to appear during the final battle or something? Right as Some Undead Guy kicks the bucket, maybe...? Anyway, it's really cool to see the Claus portrait from that Youtube video.

(I have this sinking feeling that Adorable Pig Costume Dude was a version of the Masked Man, but Pigmask Picky is a ok idea, too. Maybe it's Adorable Animal Mascot Ness?)
