MOTHER Hack
DragonDePlatino’s Mother 25th Anniversary Edition fork:
MOTHER 25th Faithful Edition

Optional Patches:

These includes 6 patches:

  • MaternalBound Omega – Rated M & MaternalBound Omega – Rated M + Run
These pair of patches are the main MaternalBound hack with some of the offensive lines restored. (They’re not that many offensive lines though, less than 5).
  • Mother 2 1:1 Literal & Mother 2 1:1 Literal + Run
These patches include a literal 1:1 translation to keep it as close as possible with the original release of Mother 2.
These includes the Octopus/Kokeshi statues as well as the original spanking sound, and other japanese-only jokes.
  • Mother 2 1:1 Literal Rated M & Mother 2 1:1 Literal Rated M + Run
Same as the last one, except this one restores some of the offensive lines omitted from the NOA localization.

Remember to give credit where credit is due, even if it is just a simple sprite.

Special Thanks & Collaborators:

  • TragicManner:

He has been of great help in this hack, initially helping me fix the two Threed NPCs and suggestions about how to edit the compressed data for the Credits sequence, and eventually helping me debug particular issues like the Ness’ Mother Prayer Cutscene, the Andonauts Lab glitch and he even started a chain of events that lead to me finding the fix for the title screen.
Also, I want to thank him for his tutorial about translating EarthBound, since that helped me understand how to input custom characters and symbols into the game (ie [AC]).

  • chillyfeez:

He’s a user over at a hacking site who has helped me a LOT to understand some basic ASM so I could pull off a proper Run Button patch exclusively for this hack!
His patience, guidance and wisdom were crucial to the proper development of the ASM Run Code.

  • John Enigma:

For his help and contributions to make the MOTHER 2 1:1 Patch a reality sooner that I could have done it. Without him it would’ve taken months to finish with the tedious process of going through the script again.

  • MANY thanks to them for their constant help and support!

BONUS HACK: Mother 25th Faithful Edition!
This is a fork of mine of the great hack made by DragonDePlatino.
I mainly made this hack for myself to satisfy myself, but decided to release it with the thumbs up by DdP himself.
This NES ROM hack contains the following changes:

  1. Intro sequence palette restored to its Blue/Red/White colours.
  2. Title Screen changes to resemble that of the original Mother, although DDP is still credited there.
  3. Giegue’s name changed to Giygas for continuity reasons with Earthbound.
  4. “Status” stat changed back to “Wisdom”

What is exactly “MaternalBound”?

What does it include? Does it come with Fly Honey?
Not exactly, though I would like to take a taste out of it just for the kicks.

This is an EarthBound hack which takes as ultimate goal to make it as close to Mother 2 as possible, along with taking care of most of the uncensoring that NOA made during the localization of MOTHER 2, including even the Gas and Title Screen modified to match that of MOTHER 2!

Why another uncensored patch of this game when we already have 2 or more?!
Well… I am really nit-picky. I decided to start going through a lot of EarthBound’s censored tiles/sprites/text and start to change it to that of MOTHER 2 according to Tomato’s comparison now that it is complete.
But it isn’t just that… There are some parts of the game in which I decide to combine both parts of the game’s text (MOTHER 2 and EarthBound) to create a much more satisfying result which doesn’t go too far from the real meaning.

Some of the references that Itoi himself intended (or are part of his past experiences) are included, and I also took some references from Tomato’s translations to what he thinks would be the better meaning/phrase/word for a certain text.
Hence: MaternalBound, which comes from a play of words to make this hack some sort of a love-letter to both Itoi (the mother of the series) and Tomato.

Take into consideration that it is an UNCENSORING project, not an un-localization one. So I would NOT be including weird Japanese names nor references since they won’t fit with the english terms, this also includes NO SWEARING so the game still holds a kid’s charm to it without falling into the obscene or rude (rated T like the official Wii U VC release), and no weird octopus statues or things like that.

Although, if you still want, there are several optional patches that can accommodate to you. like the “Faithful” patches; which restores some original references like the octopus statues, the “Mother 2 1:1 Literal" patches; which converts the whole game into MOTHER 2, literally! With all the text changed according to Tomato’s comparison, and the “Rated M” patches, which restore the foul language found in some sentences in the original MOTHER 2 text.

  • What is this hack’s ultimate goal?
As I explained just some lines above, the ultimate goal that I am trying to achieve with this hack is to create the best experience possible, combining an uncensored version of Earthbound made from scratch by me, and also adequate a Mother 2 title screen and references, this ROM will no longer be named EarthBound, but rather a proper Mother 2 american version of the game, like it was supposed to be and leaving the main game intact (without modifying any core-gameplay mechanics I mean).

NOTE: If you want changes like the original spanking sound, octopus/kokeshi statues and God references back try out the Faithful optional patches!!

Mini-rant:
I don’t like the sound effect used for Mother 2, it sounds like some guy hitting wood or a horse galloping.
Earthbound’s sound does sound like a hand’s clean hit on a pair of buns or even a child’s short scream out of pain, that’s why I decided to leave this one intact.

If you still want to restore the spanking sound from Mother 2 into your own hack, add this to your CSS files:

ROM[0xC3B989] = “[ 62 ]”

Note: Remove the spaces that separate the 62 from the square brackets.

Or follow these steps to restore the spanking sound back into the ROM, even if you already have the ROM patched with MaternalBound:

  1. Patch a normal EarthBoundB ROM as instructed in the following SPOILER. Patch MaternalBound over the clean EarthBound ROM.
  2. Open the patched ROM with HxD.
  3. Press Ctrl+G and enter in the text field “3B989” or “3BB89” (depending on wheter you have a headered or unheadered ROM), that should jump you straight into the required offset.
  4. You will see a 54, change that one to 62 (Just the 54, NOTHING ELSE!)
  5. Save the file.
  6. Enjoy!

Requirements:

  1. Download the IPS (at the end of this post).
  2. Download a software to expand your EarthBound ROM to 32Mbit (4 MB), I recommend using CoilSnake’s implemented ROM Expander.
  3. Using CoilSnake, go to Tools > Expand ROM to 32 Mbits and select your ROM to expand.
  4. Once the ROM is expanded, apply the IPS patch using Lunar IPS.
  5. ???
  6. You won!

Earthbound (U) [!].smc (3,073 kB / 3MB) – Expanded to 4 MB or 32MBit (CoilSnake’s expander tool recommended).

  • * PK MaternalBound Omega:
    This is it!
Finally got the Animated Title Screen working. Fixed a pointer in the HEX code of the ROM to point in the right address to fix it.
List of changes is TOO extensive to post here, read the README!
  • * PK MaternalBound Sigma v1.3.5:
Changed all of Threed references (text and sprite wise) back to the original Threek since Three + Eek/Reek = Threek
    Makes more sense to me.
  • * PK MaternalBound Sigma v1.3.4:
Properly set PK and PSI powers.
PSI was a mistranslation for offensive powers, so now all the psychic attacks are PK while all the others (defensive and stuff) are PSI. The menu now shows PSI again to give it consistency with Mother 1 and Mother 3.
Also, all references made within the game to Mother 2 or Mother 3 are now all in caps (i.e. MOTHER 2 / MOTHER 3).
  • PK MaternalBound Sigma v1.3.3:
Some major text changes, fixed some more typos (thanks to Man Of Stars for the intensive feedback) and also fixed a bug found in the original EB game in which once you reach Milky Well and Rainy Circle, both of their melodies are swapped when you learn them, but if you play the Sound Stone they play normally.
They now play like they should according to the Sound of Stone order when you first learn them.
  • PK MaternalBound Sigma v1.3.2.2:
Magicant and Saturn Valley ATMs updated to an original sprite.
This was done so that players can now tell that those objects are indeed ATMs and not just decoration.
Also, some text and grammatical errors have been fixed.
I wanted to wait until I could fix the prayer cutscene to show proper Night-time, but it is taking me a lot of time so far, so I decided to push a minimal update.
  • PK MaternalBound Σ (Sigma v1.3.2): Added a custom Cast Sequence! Now Pokey is named Porky and the Runaway Five are called Runaway Bros. in the cast sequence. Thanks to Rydel, JeffMan and TragicManner for their help on this milestone!
  • PK MaternalBound Σ (Sigma v1.3.1): Fixed a MAJOR bug that caused the Tea Tenda to mix his text with that of the Expresso, making the Tea sequence unplayable.
Also, added the HEX-RAM invocation that the text uses to call for Paula in some texts, I completely forgot that her name depends on how you call her at the beginning, and I just used PAULA instead of the HEX values that represent the name that got input at the beginning. This issue is something that got carried over from the CCScript text dump, for more info on this:
    http://forum.starmen.net/forum/Community/PKHack/The-Help-and-Troubleshooting-Topic-Mk-III/page/36#post2048269
  • PK MaternalBound Σ (Sigma v1.3): Major update! Gas Station changed, music notes to certain text boxes, Threed’s Hidden NPC’s restored, and Run Button and Mother 2 Title Screen optional patches included!
  • PK MaternalBound γ (Gamma v1.2): Sprites, tiles and text are now complete! Fixed an in-game typo that I missed and added a custom Nude Ness sprite for Magicant (No red cap anymore, completely nude from head to toes!)
  • PK MaternalBound β (Beta v1.1): All the sprites, tiles and text up to Dungeon Master (before Deep Darkness) edited.
  • PK MaternalBound α (Alpha v1.0): Tiles, sprites and text up to the Monkey Caves edited.

Hack implementations:

  • Gas Screen changed to fit the american name Giygas.

It also has the Mother 2 text above the “Giygas Strikes Back!” legend. This way we know for sure that he is not a newcomer and this time he’s back from the events of Mother 1.

  • Mother 2 Original Title Screen back and completely functional! (No crashes!)

Yep, the Title Screen hack made by MightyYT is included in this hack along with some changed subtitles that fits the Gas Station too!

  • Hidden Threed NPCs restored.

Huge thanks to TragicManner for helping me in this matter.

  • Credits sequence edited.

The Cast sequence at the end of the game mantained the words Pokey and Runaway Five even though all the text was changed to Porky and Runaway Bros.
Why is that? Because the Credits scene is stored as a compressed image instead of text.
Thanks to the help of Rydel, TragicManner and JeffMan, I was able to pull this milestone off and now we have a proper Credits sequence for these characters!

If you want to edit your own Credits scene, please take a look at this little tutorial I made:
http://forum.starmen.net/forum/Community/PKHack/The-Help-and-Troubleshooting-Topic-Mk-III/page/37#post2050120

  • Sprites switched to that of Mother 2.
    Some note worthy changes are:
  1. Red truck sprite changed to that of Mother 2.
  2. The Insane Cultists’ sprite changed to their HH hood
  3. Drug Stores are back, no more shops. Long live the eternal 4/20
  4. Red Crosses restored to the hospitals and nurses.
  5. Red Crosses restored to the main maps instead of the “Hospital” red letters, along with the Drug’s green sign instead of Shop. (Dept. Store green sign is kept intact)
  6. Runaway Five outfits changed to match that of the Blues Brothers. This includes sprites or sign boards that references them changed to the Runaway Brothers too.
  7. Ness nude in Magicant. Note: Ness is already in there with no clothes, although… This is a new sprite that you might want to check out.
  8. Starman Jr. sprite has been re-paletted to match the color of the Starman Jr. in Mother 1.

  • Heavy text modification.
As expected, Earthbound is one of those text-heavy RPG games, and NOA sure gave us a somewhat different version of what Itoi intended. Some of the major changes are:
  1. References to Earthbound/Earthbound 2 changed to MOTHER 2/MOTHER 3 (References to the games are written all in caps).
  2. Runaway Five changed to Runaway Brothers: No more scratching your head over why Runaway Five when they are Six (and a little word cameo to other famous brothers, let’s see if you can find it.)
  3. Pokey’s name changed to Porky: This was a must-do, of course.
  4. References to popular culture like Superman and others are included.
  5. Strong’s martial arts changed.
  6. Spanking references in text are back!
  7. Death is no longer obscured. Although, Everdred’s appearance in Fourside still has some “is he… is he…” as I thought that such text represented that of a near-traumatized person experiencing a close encounter with death instead of a simple gossipy person asking if he is already dead or not.
  8. Starman’s text changed to CAPS to better reference to his own being. Same for robot encounters.
  9. Twoson Today instead of Twoson Tribune.
  10. Grateful Dead Valley instead of Peaceful Rest Valley.
  11. Trillionage Sprout changed to Trillion Year Sprout.
  12. Major text changes in Twoson.
  13. Reference to Itoi’s favorite restaurant included in Fourside.
  14. Sky Walker instead of Sky Runner: May the PK Force be with you, Ness!
  15. Cave Boys are now Big Foot (Big foot is pronounced the same way for plural AND singular forms. Look it up)
  16. Jackie (from Jackie’s Cafe) is now Boris, same goes for the Cafe being changed to Bar.
  17. No more discrepancies. Names like Brickroad/Brick Road, Lumine Hall/Lumine Hole have all been made consistent now. Lumine Hall (no more Hole), Brickroad (Brick Road is old story) and Master Barf (Master Puke? Nah, Barf is a much more delicate cuisine!), to name a few.
  18. Kisses no longer come with a smack! Smooch
  19. Some NPCs now sing properly! (With musical notes!)
  20. I didn’t remember going through any war during this game… So the “battle against Giygas” will be over once you complete the game.
  21. References to God restored due to popular demand.

  • Typos/grammatical errors and bugs from the original EarthBound fixed.

Here’s a brief list of the typos found in EarthBound that I’ve gathered through the development of this hack:

  1. “unverse”
  2. “revious”
  3. “from bottom of her heart”
  4. “coments”
  5. “FoursideStar”
  6. “Milkey”
  7. “aroud”
  8. “Why are you are wandering around?”
  9. “enought”
  10. “Idon’t think you have enough money” – In one of the store clerk’s lines.
  11. “(NAME)seems to have too many things already” – In another store line. In CCScript is stored as [1C 02 00]seems to have too many things already. This happens TWICE.
  12. “Who is (double space) going to carry it?”
  13. “Well, (double space) I’ll leave just”. This happens twice.
  14. “I just (hee, ha, he, ha)can’t find your location”
  15. “could not (double space) carry any more stuff.”
  16. “did not have (double space) that much money.”
  17. “You do not have that (double space) much money for a deposit.”
  18. “It’s over thataway”
  19. “you seem (double space) a little young for that”
  20. “Andonut” (without the S at the end)
  21. munch, munch, munch” – No space between the first comma.
  22. Would you like to stay overnight?Thank you for always giving such generous tips!” – No line break in between “@”
  23. “@Hi,{pause(15)} you.” <- Missing {font_saturn} call at the beginning of the line (data_54.ccs). Line does include {font_normal} at the end, though.
  24. *Grin*Grin* – No proper separation between the two words other than the asterisk. Should be Grin Grin. Same for *Smile*Smile* – Smile(Space)Smile
  25. “he’ s” – Space between the ’ and the ‘s’
  26. “Why don’t we chat later-after (double space) we’ve locked horns!”
  27. “(Drug Store <Best Friend>`)” <- The apostrophe is a special character that will end up in a text overflow in-game.
  28. “One who goes to the the fishmonger and expects”
  29. “Have you have you spoken with like.”
  30. “The power of Liliput step” <— Two errors here, “Liliput” and “step”

And here are some bugs that have been fixed that were present in the original EarthBound:

  • Psionic (PSI) mistranslated attacks back to Psycho-Kinetic (PK) powers.
Smash Bros. kinda spoiled us in that department, although it wasn’t changed due to that.
I was never too fond of the term “psionics”, I always thought Psycho-Kinesis/Kinetic sounded a lot more badass!
According to the Earthbound Wiki, EB had some of the attacks mistranslated.
Mother 1 and Mother 3 use PK only for offensive powers, so PK Fire, PK Freeze, PK Thunder, PK Flash, PK Rockin were the only ones changed, all the others remain as PSI, as well as the menu and text references unless the text references a PSI attack, in which case it will now be a PK Attack for consistency with the whole game AND Mother 1 and Mother 3.
Code to change PSI Rockin to PK Rockin

ROM[0xC1C415] = byte 0 0×26
ROM[0xC1FE3D] = byte 0 0×80
ROM[0xC1FE42] = byte 0 0×7B

  • Run Button (Optional patch)
Because I hate being that slow in-game. XD
(Y button enables running as if you had eaten a Skip Sandwich)
NOTE: This is NOT the Run button patch used by CoilSnake or ANY other run patch made previously for EarthBound, this one was done from scratch with ASM hacking, so this new Run patch doesn’t glitch out the burnt sprites nor the Andonaut’s Lab!

Any suggestions, comments, corrections, typos or found a particular bug, please let me know!
Any criticism that can improve this hack is welcome!

Out of all the “uncensoring” hacks, I think that this is probably one of the most complete. Most of the other ones are just changing a few minor things, but this one is really going for it. I’ll check it out when I get the chance! I’d help out, but I don’t know much about hacking or things like that. This hack looks pretty interesting. Question: Will the Runaway Five be the Runaway Brothers or the Tonzura Brothers? You say Runaway Brothers in the OP, but they’re the Tonzura Brothers in Japan

TT: The key to sorting it all out is to understand that it doesn’t actually matter.

Thanks!
I will leave it as “Runaway Brothers”
I explained that I wanted to leave Japanese direct/literal names and play of words out.
It doesn’t matter though, since Tonzura=Runaway.

If you do play the hack and find bugs, let me know!

19/01/2015:

  • Updated OP to reflect progress made so far.
The text has been edited up until the Deep Darkness, although I haven’t updated the IPS yet, will do so this afternoon.
  • Added Known Bugs/Glitches section.
In my test-playthrough, once I learned Teleport, I bumped into a building and the sprite animation changes rapidly to that of the walking animation instead of the burnt Ness sprite. You can barely catch a glimpse of the burnt sprite for one split second before it changing to the walking animation.

EDIT:
So… I was screwing around with JHack and here is a quick result I had without the ROM blowing the heck up on me.

It’s a great advance. Hopefully I can work around some more into it to leave it as close to Mother 2’s original Title Screen with the Subtitle “Giygas Strikes Back!”

I just tried to play the hack, and couldn’t actually play the game. I could start it up and name all of my characters, but after I hit OK at the final confirmation screen, it went to black and nothing happened. I expanded the ROM using CoilSnake and patched it using Lunar IPS. I’m emulating using Snes9x. Don’t know what the problem is.

Try applying the IPS without expanding the ROM to see if it boots up normally after that.

Thanks!
I am almost at 80% of text editing, hopefully I’ll finish by the end of the week, then I’ll start with the title screens.

I went for the english names of the cities.
As I said, I will stick to english names for characters and puns, guess the same applies to the cities.

Although, I’m open for suggestions!
Who knows, maybe I end up doing two Patches.

Let me know if you find bugs or struggle to get it working.

This version adds a LOT of text.
The v1.0 had text up to the Monkey Caves, v1.1 now has text edited up to the Brick Road (Dungeon Man) part of the game, before the Deep Darkness.

Some more detail on the Teleport Sprites bug:
I tried activating Teleport and hit my face with a tree to make it clearer.
When I hit the tree I get the correct sprite shown up:

Although… The sprite is shown for just a brief second, much less than a sec!
After the blink of an eye that is the sprite appearance, it switches to the walking animation like follows:

The characters stay in the walking animation for like 3 seconds, which are the 3 seconds in which the burnt sprite should appear.
This is bugging me, I can’t seem to find the pointer to that particular sprite anywhere to see why it is occurring or maybe try to hunt down the issue.

Anyone has any idea why this happens?
I am doing the project using CoilSnake.

That’s an unavoidable side effect to using the run button patch. The game uses the same byte to keep track of your party’s “state”, which includes the running state, and the burnt state.

Did you have any trouble applying the patch so far?
Have you stumbled upon any weird “line breaks” that might require some adjustment?

I might upload the final text patch today, so be on the lookout for that one!
After the Epsilon patch, I think what follows is the Gas Station screen.

    “What’s your favorite thing?”
    Nude walking!

But guess what else is Ness’ other hobbie?

I don’t think that would be exactly brotherly love. XD

Do not worry though, this was made just to quickly test out the new nude sprites for Ness.
He will have his pijamas in the intro as usual.
Those sprites will be the ones used for Magicant.

    UPDATE EDIT:
I updated the patch and OP to reflect that or revision the PATCH GAMMA v1.2.
ALL TEXT CHANGES ARE NOW COMPLETE!

To all users that download the hack and play it, please let me know if you find any bugs, weird line breaks, or glitches. I want to receive as much feedback as possible so I can purge this hack as much as possible!

Please note that I still have the Gas Station, Title Screen and the addition of the two removed Threed NPCs to finish this hack like I intended.

    ENJOY!

      MAJOR UPDATE
I really worked on this. XD

Now the Sigma version is up.
Be sure to read the ReadMe file included in the RAR for details on the files included.
Also, re-read the OP since I updated it to reflect the main changes made until now.

I also decided to include ALL of my main source files because… F**k it.
      Why not share it?

I also added a TODO LIST near the beginning of the OP.

      If someone knows how to:

      • Change the name of PSI Rockin to PK Rockin.
I’ll be glad to add you to the credits of this hack!

Also, I included the Title Screen of Mother 2 as an optional patch because it still has the same glitched behavior than those of MightyYT’s hacks.

      • H.S. knows a workaround for the title screen.
I’ll wait for him to get back to me once he has some spare time to help me out on this.
Doesn’t matter if it is an static image without animation, is well worth it.

      That pretty much covers everything.

That sums it up for this hack, until I find a way to include a proper non-glitched Title Screen for Mother 2 and know how to change the name of PSI Rockin to PK Rockin, that day I will release:

      MaternalBound Omega!

      ENJOY!

The Title Screen’s hard to do in JHack without getting a broken rom afterwards.
But for the PSI to PK, assuming that you didn’t know already and you use CCScript…

      ROM[0xC1C415] = “29
(You might have to re-insert the quotes, pasting it in notepad++ messes it up.)

Add that somewhere in your code.
I found it when I was roaming around the Troubleshooting stuff.

I guess at this point you only need a non-glitched Title Screen, right?

      THANKS!
I’ll add that tomorrow as v1.31 for the hack.
I’ll look for that address in the .css files to see if I can change it.

And yes, at this point only that remains.
A Mother 2 title screen that doesn’t glitch out on us, perhaps a possible Run button fix that doesn’t screw up the teleportation graphics but that’s not the high priority though.

Oh yes I noticed that when I replied to him.

it should be “[ 29 ]” just like that, but the forum makes it uppercase (or something similar XD)
BTW, exactly where is that address in CoilSnake’s files or where should I put the [ 29 ]?

I took a dive to all the .CSS files but couldn’t find any 0xC1C415 address in there.

      EDIT:
      Hey Rydel and JakeTheShrimp.
      Thanks for your help.
Although, the [ 29 ] part of the code only removed the “PSI” from the table, leaving only “Rockin” in there.
To properly add “PK” before Rockin, the following code must be put in any of the .CSS files for CoilSnake:

      ROM[0xC1C415] = byte [ 0 ] 0×26
      ROM[0xC1FE3D] = byte [ 0 ] 0×80
      ROM[0xC1FE42] = byte [ 0 ] 0×7B

I read a lot of the Troubleshooting page and JeffMan gave this code.

Edit 2: If you open up your save with EB Save Editor after using that code, you should see that your favorite thing is now “PPK Rockin” instead of PSI Rockin, which means it is properly working
Oh and you have to start a new game to make it work properly

Next time I play Earthbound, I think I’ll do it with this version. Great job, ShadowOne!

So I’ve heard that the issue with the title screen crashing is that the pointers aren’t changed/updated when it was created in JHack. Couldn’t this be something that can be manually changed once the new title screen is inserted? I’m assuming there’s more to it than that, or else I would’ve figured people would’ve done this by now…

Oh and one quick text suggestion if you haven’t already done something with it. Tomato noted that one billboard in Threed is meant to be a haiku, but the English translation comes up one syllable short with the second line. Having it say “greets you on this evening” instead of “greets you this evening” will correct it.

And yes, that is EXACTLY how to put it.
My main goal was to make a version that closely resembles that of Mother 2, or the definitive uncensored version of Earthbound as you call it, but keeping intact all of the english terms/jokes and keeping it also kid-friendly.
And also, trying to make it finally fit into the trilogy with a proper (and needed) “Mother 2” title into it.

      Thanks.
Yes, the main issue with the Title Screen is that, since the original Title screen hacks were done in JHack, JHack itself tends to reallocate data into the ROM, it works straight from the ROM without extracting any data at all.
So when the Title Screen is modified, the data is shifted into another area in the ROM’s expanded data, screwing up the pointers, while in reality it should change those pointers to re-direct to the newly allocated data in the ROM.

It is all a matter of ASM/Pointer hacking the title screen to see where it tries to point to when pressing the button, and where it SHOULD point to to make it work properly.
There are two options: Either make it point to the title screen final animation, or make it jump straight into the Save/Load Screen at the press of a button.
I am trying my best to try to get help from people known to hack games with ASM or gameplay mechanics, but I haven’t got any response so far.

I am also trying on my side to try to debug the issue.
I will start taking a look at the ROM while being played from Snes9x Debugger and see what I can pinpoint from that.

Oh and thanks for the headsup for the Haiku, I will take a note and add it in the next release. which will fix a LOT of issues, along with some tiles I missed, like the Club Stoic tiles in Summers, I changed them back to Stoic Club, that kind of picky details. And a text glitch in Summers too.

If you know of any other Haiku-related text that should be changed, let me know since I am not too familiar with those.

I am taking quite long to release the 1.3.1 version because I am doing a complete playthrough of the game, making sure that every single text I edited is being output in a correct and nice way in-game.

So just hold a little longer for the next release.

And THANKS again for how well-received the comments have been so far.
Certainly motivates me to keep going on with this til the very (hopefully) finished product!

Did that and it works just fine. Playing it on my old save right now! Thanks for the help.

If you know of any other Haiku-related text that should be changed, let me know since I am not too familiar with those.

I think the only other haiku that had a kind of wonky translation is this sign in Dungeon Man.

In Earthbound it simply reads: “If you work hard, you don’t have time to get burned.”

Tomato’s literal translation is of a proverb that reads “If but the [water] wheel be diligent, the water has no time to freeze.”

Which… doesn’t read too well either, and doesn’t match the standard haiku syllable structure.

There’s a couple of different ways you could rewrite this. If you wanted to stick with the original translation that evokes water wheel imagery, something like this might work:

      If the watermill
      Never stops, then the water
      Has no time to freeze

If you wanted to keep with the “don’t get burned” message of the Earthbound translation, then how about this:

      If you feel the heat
      Always at your back, never
      Stop, lest you get burned

Of course, all of these suggestions are entirely subjective, and if anyone else wants to try their hand at haikus, by all means go for it.

I did keep the Mother 2 haiku (wheel be diligent one), although I think the first one you mention sounds a lot better, I think I’ll add that one for v1.3.1.

The water has no time to freeze.

I didn’t change the sound effect for this uncensoring project.
Why? Because I don’t like the sound of the Mother 2 one, it sounds like a horse galloping or a bunch of wooden knocks, instead of the Earthbound one which sounds like a clean spank.

…But I do have the code for those that would want to add it back.
If you are refering to the Spanking sound when Mr. Minch punishes both Picky and Porky, this is the code to enable the original sound from Mother 2.

      http://forum.starmen.net/forum/Community/PKHack/EarthBound-Restored/page/1#post1836262

Props to HS for providing that restoration code.
In a wild guess, if you are using CoilSnake, my assumption is that you could enter something like this:

      ROM[0xC3B989] = byte [ 0 ] 0×62

      Or:

      ROM[0xC3B989] = 62

I don’t know which one might work.
Just edit the clean ROM using JHack like HS mentions, then use that very same ROM as the base ROM for the CoilSNake project, download my Source Files and compile it, easy as that!

      GENERAL QUESTION:
Should I keep PK Farewell or change it to PK Sayonara?
This change makes sense, since Poo is often seen as an oriental boy, I think Sayonara would fit, since Sayonara is indeed Farewell in Japan, isn’t it?

      sprite Ballz

      I’ll put it like:
If the watermill (or water wheel) remains digilent,
The water has no time to freeze.

      What do you think?

It wouldn’t be a haiku if the phrasing is exactly like that. But you could then add something like “—Ancient Proverb” at the end to clarify it (Tomato’s screenshot makes it appear the original Japanese did something like this, but I can’t read Japanese so I can’t say for sure).

Poo’s culture appears to be of a more generic “mystic orient” vibe which reminds me of something like India, but definitely not Japan. I personally would rather it remain PK Farewell.

      January 25th UPDATE

Ok so I FINALLY got over the whole game checking every part of text I modified.
It all seems to fit in nicely and the sprites work as intended.

I also gotta say that the custom Nude Ness sprite really fits, since the copycat Ness gives you the Baseball Cap, so Ness isn’t intended to have it at the beginning of Magicant.

      With that said:

      Changelog for v1.3.1:

      • FIxed a game breaking bug that carries over by default from CCScript’s text dump, in which you are not able to enter the tea sequence in Tenda’s Village because his text gets replaced by that of the Express Service.
      • Fixed a glitched text in Summers.
      • Changed tiles for the Stoic Club. Originally they said CLUB STOIC, now they say STOIC CLUB, like it should.
      • Some other minor text changes, like linebreaks adjustments and so on.
      • Added the HEX-RAM invocation that the text uses to call for Paula in some texts, I completely forgot that her name depends on how you call her at the beginning, and I just used PAULA instead of the HEX values that represent the name that got input at the beginning.

As always, if you find any bug or glitch, let me know to fix it ASAP.

      ENJOY!

PS: Now I will try to get into the Credits. Since there is no current tool developed for EB to change its Credits, I will have to dig a little bit into my old days of NES HEX editing and see if I can HEX edit the Credits to change them.
Mostly, I will change only Runaway Five → Runaway Bros, Pokey Minch → Porky Minch and Poo’s Master → Yi-Si-Qi.

Just hit a major miliestone in the development of this hack.:

      CREDITS SEQUENCE EDITED!

      21DA35 → 21E6E6

The only character that I wont be able to modify Poo’s Master.

Poo’s name is being taken from the RAM, the very moment you choose his name at the beginning of the game, it will appear in there, it is NOT being stored in the Credits compressed data, so it will be Poo’s Master instead of Yi-Si-Qi for my hack.

Even worse, the word “Master” is ALSO being shared by both the Star Master and Poo’s Master (Yi-Si-Qi) in the compressed data, so there will be no way to separate them unless I figure out something tricky.

      Take a look:

The compressed text at the upper left corner is that of BOTH Star Master and Poo’s Master, the text below it is that of the Dungeon Master. The black in between is that of the page break in game (the crystal like thing that separates some characters in the credits scene).

I’m quite happy with both Porky and Runaway Bros. Besides, it’s not like Yi-Si-Qi is not Poo’s master anyway, so no harm done there.

Gotta give a HUGE THANKS to TragicManner, without his explanation about how to extract the compress graphics I would have gotten nowhere with that.

PS1: If someone wants the Credits.smc file with just Pokey changed to Porky and the instructions on how to put them in the game, send me a PM.
I’ll be glad to share it with you guys!

PS2: I haven’t updated the hack because I am having issues with the Insane Cultists’ palette, this is caused due to the modified compress data for the credits being larger in size than the original, so I will take a look at the recommendation given by Rydel to try to put them back in their original color and not some Moonside oddity.

Yeah, I tend to get those whenever I recompile the ROM in CoilSnake, replace it with the old ROM and then load up my save state in front of some NPCs, they get somewhat glitchy but that’s normal.

I just re-enter the place and all is well now.

My bet goes into saying that it happens because of shifted data between the ROM and the save state recorded data.
The save states holds all the data currently in screen, so if you boot up another ROM which was not the original one, you get that kind of response.

It is all the save state fault, the normal SRM save works normally.

I look forward to the day you can implement a dynamic custom title screen into the game, as I’m in the habit of skipping to the Load screen ASAP, meaning I rarely see the gas station screen, and I even less frequently see the intro, so having to watch the same thing every time I start the game up would get irritating.

          I do hope so too.
I am doing my best to find a way to be able to fix that issue, either by implementing the method that H.S. recommended or finding a way with the title screen pointers.

          Only time will tell.

I never skip those when playing… Why? I don’t know. I guess I enjoy listening their music.

Anyways, do I have to expand the rom before patching?

The ROM does have to be expanded first using CoilSnake’s 32 Mbits ROM Expander.
After that you can apply the patch and it should work as intended.

Even though, try patching WITHOUT expanding the ROM, I think it worked for me when I tried it once.

PS: In case anyone wonders why there hasn’t been an update, it is because I am still struggling with the proper inclusion of the changed names into the Cast Sequence.
You can see why if you take a dive into the Troubleshooting topic.

Alright, Gave a quick run on SNES9x to both patches without expanding the ROM (Each patch on a different rom).

And both seem to work just dandy!

Now, let’s see if it works on my Android SNES emu. I’ll tell you how it goes.

Oh, and, do I patch the Run Button one over the already patched ROM?

Hope it works well on the Android Emu!
Tell if it does so, I use SNEX EX for Android and would be great if I could carry my hack along with me for long trips.

And yes, you simply apply the Run patch over the already hacked ROM to make it work.
Just remember that the Failed Teleportation sprites do not show up properly with the RUN patch.
