<p>Some of you may have already heard, but for those of you who haven't (or who missed it), <i>Shin Chan</i> contained a MOTHER reference in episode 36, which aired at 1:30 am on June 15 on Adult Swim. The family was discussing their creepy nerd neighbor, and Mitzi said the following line:</p>

(Note: <i>Shin Chan</i> contains dirty jokes, cartoon nudity, and semi-bad language, so please don't click that link if you think your heart will fail.)</p>
<p>So! What does this mean? Well obviously, one of the dub writers for <i>Shin Chan</i> is a fan of the MOTHER series, or has at least heard of it. MOTHER isn't a very well-known game, so this reference is pretty shocking considering Nintendo of America is doing everything in its power to pretend the entire series doesn't exist. Hats off to FUNimation for giving us MOTHER fans a little something to smile about!</p>
Almost certain that it's not the same, since the Japanese for "mother" is "kaasan". "MOTHER" (referring to the game) is pronounced like "mazaa" in Japanese. Two different words, so it doesn't work as a pun.
Plus, they have to change the writing for American audiences because the original Japanese is pretty tame compared to what FUNimation gives us. It'd be too boring for Adult Swim, otherwise.

I actually have never played any of the Mother games, but I'm a big Nintendo dork and am eternally frustrated with the offerings on the Wii's Virtual Console (hence my sympathies for Mother fans). While writing that vignette last September, I started thinking about all the hardest-of-the-hard-core things our version of Yonro could be into, and I decided that he'd be a big time Mother lover. (Plus, how many times has "Mother" ever been mentioned on U.S. television? I'm guessing zero. It's always cool to break new nerd-ground.)
Oh, and that vignette is actually nine minutes long and had to be cut down to air. In the longer cut, there's another videogame reference that comes after Yonro drinks with Hiro and wakes up with a hangover. He tells Mitzi he slept horribly and spent "most of the night puking into my Legendary Edition Master Chief Cat Helmet."
Hah! That's awesome. When I saw it last night (well, the night before on adultswim.com) I was like "oh crap, they have us pegged".
Anyway, it's good to hear from you. The Shin Chan writing is easily the most enjoyable stuff on Adult Swim, right up there with Harvey Birdman and Venture Bros. Keep up the good work
Shin Chan airs here(India) too, though its in Hindi.
And the dub sucks.
I might enjoy it more if it was in English.

Thanks for the love amuniz3. Shin Chan is easily one of the best shows on Adult Swim, so its great to know the writers themselves have a equally great sense of humor. Keep up the good work. And demand an earlier time slot! Two episodes of Inuyasha in a row is a waste.
I watched it, after several attempts from my brother to get me to watch it. I heard "Mother", and my ears pricked up, but sometimes they talk a little too quickly for my unaccustomed brain to process. But I remember that now! Thank you for referencing the Mother series, even if it was made by the dorkiest character ever.

I've never really been into the show until recently. Its a really funny show. I can't beleive there was a Mother reference. Television should have more references to Mother. I hope NOA relizes what they are doing is wrong. And is the "heart failing on you" a reference to a past topic? lol yeah it must be. As my sig quotes a famous line from it. Why does NOA pretend that Mother doesn't exist? Blame its parents!
I remember seeing this show in Cuba, and I really don't see why everyone loves the show. I dunno, I watched it with 8 other friends, we were all drunk, and no one laughed.
The State of Utah is a degenerate, blasted intellectual wasteland, and I pity everyone unfortunate enough to be stuck there, and scorn everyone involved in its continued fall into babbling idiocy.
There are a handful of different English versions of the show, if you saw it in Cuba, I'm assuming you didn't see the FUNi version. The other versions are much tamer. It is a kid's show originally, after all.
It was on Cartoon Network, broadcast from the States. It definitely wasn't tame.
I don't consider marital abuse, and a stuffed bunny talking about being put in "the box" and raping a dog (who he is apparently married to) as "tame".

That's fantastic! I'm a big Shin-chan (also known as "Crayon Shin-chan" in Japan) fan but didn't happen to catch its most recent episode. What were the odds of a MOTHER reference appearing such a silly show? Kudos to FUNimation!

Actually, Mother has been mentioned on US television before. in a trip to japan segment on MTV. the host of the segment finishes off the segment by saying "Now if you'll excuse me. i gotta go buy Mother 3". Just sayin is all, btw thanks for the referrance. i thought that was totally hardcore
Watching the English dub of the show always made me weirded out because I always watched it as a kid in the Chinese dub: Wan Pi Shao Shin. All of the nudity and sex jokes were always like potty jokes to me. That's just so bizarre... :S
Well that's cool that they mentioned Mother. The more publicity, the better, eh?
To be honest this show airs and like 1:30 in the morning when all the sane people are asleep. (Don't get me wrong, I love insanity as much as the next guy). And In all honesty I dont really like Shin Chan at all. I am glad there was a mother reference in it. Kudos, props to all your...well, Mothers. To lame?

I always figured that Adult Swim came on at such a late hour BECAUSE the content was typically only appealing to most of the lesser-sane groups, who were usually the only ones still up. :p
...which isn't me, most of the time, I'm afraid. Being a fan of the old classic cartoons many shows in AS make fun of, I kinda was turned off at seeing how they'd wrecked some of the shows I grew up with. But that's just me, so don't let what I'm saying upset anyone.
