This topic can now be a general purpose topic for other-language translations.

FWIW, poik007’s gonna be heading the French translation, and TurboNess will be doing the Spain Spanish version I think.

Like I mentioned in the Spanish topic, it would help us a lot if there was only one main translator for each translation, and we would interact with that person. Said person could have people help out, but me and Jeff would only interact with the main translator. Does that make sense?

NOTE: These other translations will begin after the English patch is out!

sprite Cianci

Well, I can't say I disagree with you Mato. The translations would probably be much more organized if you guys communicated only with one translator. The interaction would be quicker and much more incisive.

I'd like to volunteer myself as a translator/main translator if that was the case. I play videogames since I was a child, and here in Brazil I had to learn english, so I could understand the games' stories. As I said in the blog, I already worked on some fan-translated mangas, and I have enough free time.I'm really eager to help as a fan of the Mother series.

    sprite Pango.PD

Yes, Mato, I think you are right.

Putting too many people in one ranslation would create a lot of contradictions.

But, if the Brazilian Portuguese needs help in translating the text, ?I'm willing to help.

      P.s.: I'm Gustavo.

      sprite dr.mario

Is there a topic for the French translation? I couldn't find one, but I'm willing to proofread, grammar-check, or do whatever to back up poik007. It's my job in real life, and I'm pretty darn good at it. I wouldn't have too much free time to translate, but I could do a second pass to make sure there are no errors. I'd love to help speed up the French work here if the help is needed.

        sprite Cianci

Well, after spending some more time thinking about this "one translator to communicate with Mato and Jeff" thing, my opinion got pretty divided...

I mean, I think it's somewhat essencial for the translation decisions (like puns to be translated) to be taken by more than one person... So, even though only one person should interact with you, Mato, don't you think it's good to have more than one person discussing about the translations?

          Just a thought...

          • MatoBadge

Yes, that's what I said. There should be one main person. If that person wants some people to help him/her, then that's fine. But the main person is the main person, and will be the person we communicate with.

Well, I wouldn't mind helping out with the French translation but I don't think I have the time to be a main translator (unless you want to get the translation done by 2012 <.<;)

Hey guys, I'm also interested in being involved in the Portuguese (Br) translation. On MSN I'm Iguana2867@hotmail.com. We should definitely chat and get to talking about the project.

Also, I've been translating Earthbound into Portuguese and wouldn't mind a little help with that if someone has the time.

              sprite millhouse

I offer my services as german translator. I always loved earthbound, and I would be honored to work on such a project. I have excellent german skills, I am both fluent in speech and know the tacks and hacks of spoken german, I have quite a lot of free time to dedicate to this translation, and I promise I'll try to keep the quirkyness and so called earthbound-y-ness (pun intended) of the game, also finding a fitting and still accurate translation for things like figures of speech or haikus, that are used.

please contact me, even if you decline my services. please email me at Max.wagner01@yahoo.de, if you'd like an msn address, just tell me

Hello Mato, I would be really glad to translate Mother 3 in Italian.

I'm an HUGE fan of the Mother series, and I've already got romhacking experience behind my back. Gemini probably remembers me from the good ol' times in the Italian romhacking scene. Back then, I had a Romhacking group, so I'm pretty used to lead projects and coordinating translators.

I've already posted sometimes in the M3 translation blog, under different nicknames (mainly Lol), so you might remember me from there

If you want to ask me anything, please send me a PM or a Mail.

              Thanks for your time

OK, I really want to help translating the game to Brazilian Portuguese, Mato. Count me in!

Mostly, I have lots of free time on my hands. I'll try to keep with everything once it's started.

I've worked before in one EarthBound translation to Brazilian Portuguese (which is on hold for now), along with I am the Will, Koopser, Flicky, and Lou.mds. The Kirby was the hacker of the project.

The way we worked on the translation was the following:
              • The Kirby would come with some line for us to translate.
              • Each one of the translators would translate the lines the way they wanted.
              • We would discuss not for too long, and finally have a line that everyone liked, and proceed to the next one.

              sprite Cianci

It's very nice to see so many brazilians interested in Mother. =] My msn is donaldverdugo@hotmail.com I already added TragicManner and Dracoofdragonheart, who wants to, can add me too. It'll probably be our main chat line in the project.

                See ya \o

                sprite Purity

Wow! There are so many people wanting to translate it to Brazilian Portuguese!

I came here to offer my services as a Portuguese(really from Portugal) translator! As I said in the blog, I'm taking translation at university, and I would LOVE to translate this to Portuguese...

Seeing as "Brazilian" annoys most portuguese people, I'm sure this translation would make more people play it here in Portugal.. On the other hand, Portugal is a really small country, and EarthBound isn't really popular in Europe, so I doubt I'd get more than 100 guys playing my translation! XD

Even so, I'm willing to do it, if you think it's worth it, as I have too much free time in my hands at the moment!

Yeah, I don't mind there being two Portuguese translations. I also don't mind there being two Spanish translations.

But so many people wanting to help = me not knowing what to do. So if you people could organize yourselves, that would help a LOT.

                sprite Pango.PD

In Brazil, Orkut is very used, diffrently from other countries, that at least by what I know, have very few Orkut users. So, I think that for Brazil, Orkut would be a good way to keep contact and to organize ourselves. Should we make a community?

...But, I think it should be only temporary, cuz’ I don’t think Orkut is good for this kind of thing, maybe we should use Orkut until everything is defined and we have a website or blog os something else.

                  sprite BreakingOrder

Purity, please let me help you with anything! It’s obvious your translating skills are superior than mine, since you’re taking translation at university, but I still can do work on this, and I would love to. I’ve been bringing this subject many times on the blog, but not even one compatriot replied. Made me wonder if Portugal even had any Mother fans… Oh, and Mato, about European Portuguese, don’t worry about organization, since it looks like with only two of them around, it will be easy. Some languages DO need that sort of thing though. Let’s just hope they can all get to an agreement.

I mean, in the history of nintendo games? that fans all over the world began to take upon themselves to translate a japan-exclusive game into their languages?

But there is, a Mr. Saturn imported a “Mother 3” to their planet from japan and they already started to translate the game.

Being a hardcore Earthbound-fan, and having studied english and norwegian litterature and language, I’d be more than qualified to translate Mother3 to norwegian. I’d like to play through the game first, though, so this won’t happen any time soon. I can’t imagine many people needing, or even wanting to play the game, or any game really, in norwegian. But it would be a fun spare time activity. If anyone else in Norway wants to do this, I’m certainly available to help out, and if nothing has begun after I’ve finished the game, then I’ll roll up my sleeves.

                                    sprite millhouse

Oh, yeah, right… in general, when should the translations take place? I bet there’s a lot of people who haven’t played the game yet and who don’t want to get spoiled before having played through the game first (me included, logically, otherwise we wouldn’t be here, right? an english trnalsaiton wouldn’t be interesting for us if we all speak japanese…)

so will the other language packs appears as a follow up of the initial english translation, or will they launch alongside with the english patch?

I want to keep away form spoilers as far as I possibly can, but of course, if I am going to help translate the whole script to another language, then there won’t be much surprise to the game for me…

what do you think? translate alongside of the english version of after completion?

(PS: if we are to translate alongside of the english verison, I’d kindly ask for more help for the german translation, preferrably from someone who doesn’t care about being spoiled, or who has already played through the game in japanese… so someone else can take the big part of the spoiler text… I’d limit myself to detail work. if there’s no one willing to take that job, I’ll of course do it myself and ignore spoilers…)

Wow… There are so many brazilians in here and i didn’t have the idea…

Er… I’m from Brazil and I was the one who translated that sign in the screenshot into Brazilian Portuguese… I knew some would don’t like the “pisotear” word, but I’ve translated it that way because I think it’s more MOTHERish than “pisar” in our language.

I translate some mangas for a group called Fanservice, and if you see my works you going to understand I don’t like translating the dialogues literally. I like to adequate the language to the thing, and I like the MOTHERs’ happy inocent humour.

Well… If you want contact me:

tomato, tell me, are the tools 64-bit tested or even compatible? I’m running on a 64-bit vista, (it sucks, don’t install vista), but I still have an old installation (which is cramped full of junk) of the regular 32-bit XP on my HDD… I’d like to use vista, since my XP is (hard to imagine, but yes…) less stable than my vista installation, and I’d have to do some major deleting and moving prior to having a usable XP…

oh, and you don’t know how glad I am that you don’t expect us to start translating right off the hook. I really want to enjoy this game in all its beautiful english earthboundyness

Mato, have you already decided who is going to translate it into german? And how are you going to send the tools to the translators? Private Message or E-mail?

jjolli: I’m hoping that people HERE will organize themselves, since I don’t really have time to interview everyone and see who has the most free time, the most skill, the least likely to start internet drama, etc.

These other translations won’t start until after the English patch is out, so I don’t know the details yet.

I suppose this kind of extended project could benefit from some sort of Wiki. It would be a logical way of tracking progress and keeping tabs on who is doing what and when. More organized and immediately informative than a forum thread, at least! Still, making a wiki at this point would be of little help. I suppose that we need to wait for the official unofficial translation to be completed so we can enjoy the game, and then we can start looking at the script and translation tools and size the thing up into manageable blocks. At this point, a wiki will be of great help. I’m mostly just talking aloud to myself here – so I’m not intending to just point out the obvious and try to seem smart. But as Tomato says, we will have to organize ourselves in some way at some point.
