I view video topics the same way I view topics that base around the discussion of an article. A video is simply another media outlet to share news with others, similar to articles. So then why are video topics any different from article topics if they both revolve around something important or jarring?
Well, I'm not the one in charge, but I think that posting a topic with a link to a video or a news article as the starting point for a discussion is cool. The problem as I see it is that a lot of folks just post a link to a video without really saying anything about it, and sometimes without even hinting at what the video is about ("funny video lol").
The same thing happens with news articles. Someone'll just copy the entire contents of an article into a post, and say nothing about it except to implore others to "discuss." If that's all you're going to do, then I think it does make sense to just dump all of those posts into a comprehensive thread. I can't imagine a moderator deleting your thread if it has some real meat to it (as your "police brutality" post presumably did--I didn't catch that one), but if it's
just a link to a video or article, what's the point? If I want to see funny videos, I can just browse Youtube at my leisure. If I want to see what's in the news, I can just peruse Google news. It doesn't make sense to flood the forum with that sort of thing.
It appears that Rioting Nerd has been scorned for expressing this opinion. I don't know that whole story behind that situation, but I think his sentiment is on the mark, at least. There are some great links in this thread, but I wouldn't want to see them taking up half the main GD page.
