yeah wow this post was outdated, all you folks need to know is to check the LAST PAGE to see what’s going on. couldn’t say much else other than *I* need more techno (and metal and indie stuff and ska and experimental things). and i love music. most of it.
rock on starmans!
[SimonBob] I cried because I had no life. Then I met a man who had no continues.
I listen to a bit of everything. Here are the highlights:
-The Decemberists
-The Go! Team
-Jill Scott
-Barenaked Ladies (almost exclusively the new stuff, not 90s music)
-Sleater-Kinney
-The Books
-Animal Collective
-Mirah
The Flaming Lips, Steve Burns, and The Strokes are my three favorite bands.
They've inspired me so much and fuel my secret ambition to become a rock star. Steve Burns inspired me to learn guitar.
BOLDSTATE : FFVII should embrace the ugly, weird game it has become by not taking itself as seriously as its bloated Compilation.
-Bauhaus
-Visage
-The Fixx
-Richard Cheese
-David Bowie
-Peter Murphy
-Japan
-Sex Pistols
-Love and Rockets
Just some favorites.
I like a lot of everything and I'm going to try to type the complete list.

I'm big into metal (primarily power metal) and indie/alternative, as well as some ska, some j-pop, and some electronic.
My favorite band list looks a little something like this:
Ween (my absolute favorite band, and if you're not easily offended I highly recomend picking up one of their newer albums, such as Quebec)
Sonata Arctica
Blind Guardian
Ratatat (their music reminds me of Cave Story)
Reel Big Fish
Joel Plaskett Emergency (and also Joel Plaskett's solo work)
High and Mighty Color
Lufia
Buckethead, Bela Fleck, and Frank Zappa. Those are probably my top three artists.
Big Wreck, Dream Theater, They Might Be Giants, Supertramp, and Oscar Peterson are the other main standbys of my playlist.
The State of Utah is a degenerate, blasted intellectual wasteland, and I pity everyone unfortunate enough to be stuck there, and scorn everyone involved in its continued fall into babbling idiocy.
I like Ween too. If you like ska/metal, I'm surprised you didn't list Fishbone - they're awesome (a little funk thrown in).
I like Bjork, Air, Emiliana Torrini, Joanna Newsom, Acid Bath, Melvins, Kyuss, White Town, Sneaker Pimps, Ghostland Observatory, O'Rynn, Lamb, Massive Attack, Keiichi Suzuki, Yoko Kanno, plenty of video game musics, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Christine, Hope Sandoval, Fight Club Soundtrack, No Doubt, Susumu Hirasawa, prolly more...
I actually haven't heard a lot of ska, but I like what I've heard. I fully intend to listen to more of it eventually, so I'll definitely give Fishbone a shot.
Lufia
I like too much music to list my favorite bands (I'd feel like I'd be hurting some bands by not mentioning them, or be taking up way too much space by listing so many), but my top-five genres are:
-Third-wave (Please call it third-wave, lest you upset the Rude Boys)
-Metal (The more raw it is, the better)
-Punk (Keep my punk raw like my metal)
-Emo (My secret shame)
-Underground Rap (If mainstream artists didn't soil the genre's name, maybe I wouldn't have to write 'Underground')
While not typical of ska, the Rx Bandits do fit the genre, although they're more prog-rock ska.
And... they're amazing.
the decemberists
black star
streetlight manifesto.
I'd possibly crash the server if I typed up all the bands that I adore and obsess over, so I'll just type up a shorter list that I've been devoting the most time to the last few months, in no particular order.
The Smashing Pumpkins, Ra, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, The Alkaline Trio, Sage Francis, The Cure, Streetlight Manifesto, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, A Perfect Circle, The Dresden Dolls, Phoenix (aka Transsylvania/Pasarea Phoenix), The Offspring, Apartment 26, The Toasters, The Clash, DeVotchKa, The Flaming Lips, The Postal Service, The Beatles, Skindred, and The White Stripes.
“I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool.”
Major Obsessions are...
The Dandy Warhols
Radiohead
The Velvet Underground
Aphex Twin/AFX/Polygon Window/Caustic Window/whatever Richard D. James decides to go by
Boards of Canada

Magic carpet is the transportation, went to the moon in a soda can. Not all my boys believe in science, stretching truth in the Promised Land. But you won’t be getting in, (you know by now.) no you won’t be getting in. ( you know by now.) No, you won’t be getting in…it’s souled out, in heaven.
I am a prog freakazoid. I love any and every prog act.
My top 10 are:
1 Dream Theater
2 The Mars Volta
3 Yes
4 Rush
5 Genesis (Gabriel Era)
6 Spocks Beard
7 Symphony X
8 King Crimson
9 Flower Kings
10 Gong
Lately, I've really into The Mars Volta. They're so different and original. They're new album is killer. AND...to any Canadian Fans in the forums, Check MTV Live next tuesday at 6 PM. They're gonna be there and it's gonna be sweet.
I also play the drums. I'm completely self taught and I've been playing on the same crappy kit for 4 years. I've upgrading bit by bit. But i'm getting there. I play in a band, we don't really meet up often so i'm looking to form a new one. I write outlandish lyrics, kinda Neil Peart-ish. I also write music, not very properly. I play in odd time signatures. (7/8, 14/57, 5/4, even 2/46!)
Bands I despise:
Dragonforce (Their songs all sound the same -_-)
Sum 41
Genesis (Because they went so crappy after Peter Gabriel left)
Creed (who doesn't?)
Limp Bizkit
EDIT: I forgot to mention a band I've recently gotten into is Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mount Zion. They're essentially the same band.
My music
Last.fmPM me with comments about it.
I'm a huge fan of indie rock and post-rock especially. My favorite bands are:
Mando Diao
The Deadly Snakes
Mogwai
Arcade Fire
The Fratellis
The Quarter After
The High Dials
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Bjork
Belle & Sebastian
Babyshambles
The Libertines
They Might Be Giants
The Apples in Stereo
I have tons more, but I won't make my list too long.
I'm into Post-hardcore and Prog
lately I've been getting into rap, well, not mainstream rap, that is mostly crap.
favorites (at the moment at least):
thrice
at the drive-in
glassJAw
rx bandits
circa survive (but on letting go is pretty meh)
i am the avalanche
the mars volta
atmosphere
ghostface killah
I like what I'm seeing here!
I also love prog stuff like The Mars Volta and Dream Theater. I should check out Fishbone, and anyone who likes ska, or hasn't really heard much of it, check out Streetlight Manifesto and possibly Reel Big Fish and Suicide Machines.
[SimonBob] I cried because I had no life. Then I met a man who had no continues.
3 Inches of Blood
311
Thats it. nothing else. Maybe Iron Maiden...
Big D and the Kids Table
seen 'em about 10 times and they never cease to blow my mind. each album is as good or better than the last. im also a total whore for their merch; i even have their BOTTLE OPENER
And I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say it but streetlight is not ska at all. If you're looking for a good introduction to ska, check out the Slackers, the Toasters, the Planet Smashers, the Pietasters, Makeshift Heroes (good luck tracking any of their stuff down, but if you can it's absolute gold) and Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.
On the more punk side, check out Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, old Catch22, old No Doubt, hell even old Op Ivy, Mad Caddies, River City Rebels, old Rancid.
For bands that are some sort of ska but not classic and not punk, check out Reel Big Fish, Pain, Sublime, old Aquabats, Suburban Legend, Suburban Rhythms, Tim Armstrong's solo stuff, 7 Seconds of Love, and (although not technically ska but some absolutely delicious dirty reggae) the Aggrolites, Bedouin Soundclash, Cheap Suits, The Johnstones, some old Goldfinger (lol).
I think that about covers it.
[edit] Treasure I would hesitate to call the Streetlight re-release of Keasby a cover, it's more of a re-release. Tom basically wrote every single note for every single track on that album, it's his baby and as long as he's in the band playing it it's not a cover. The man is a musical genius.
You are correct Rioting Nerd. Tom even states the fact in robo talk and the end of the album!

Oh man, Voodoo Glow Skulls. I've only got one song by them, and I've had it as long as I can remember. It was only labeled "Left_For_Dead" back then though, and I only found the artist about a month ago. I need to get more of them.

and always on the lookout for new bands to add to my collection
I can't believe I forgot to mention Voodoo Glow Skulls. For some reason I didn't see them in my winamp playlist. Their best album, IMO, is "Who is, This is?"
Also: the pietasters are absolutely amazing. download every single bit of their material you can get your hands on. if you cant get your hands on it, hit me up on irc and ill dcc you whatever you need.
The menu for today is as follows.
-To start, Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" is a delicious serving of post-rock, while Trentemoller's "The Last Resort" is serving up some savory electronic beats and delicately processed basslines.
-As a main course, Opeth provides a fantastic melodic death metal concept album with "Ghost Reveries" (Bonus points for Harlequin Forest and Beneath the Mire: Metal with jazz influences is always a good thing), with a side salad of mixed indie, dance and progressive influences in the form of MGMT's new album, "Oracular Spectacular".
-Finally, a light slice of experimental group Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" drizzled with Dub Trio's mixture of spaced out dub and hard punk in "New Heavy" provides a perfect finish.
-Sip on a chilled glass of The Prizefighter Inferno's confusing and delightful blend of acoustic rock and electronica, with a garnish of early Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's psychedelic punk self-titled album.
dang. i gotta go make me a sammich or something.

You are lucky. I envy you.
Also, Planet Smashers are great! Man, I'm gonna have so much music...
Also, Voodoo Glow Skulls
[SimonBob] I cried because I had no life. Then I met a man who had no continues.

ska
yeahhh
ps. nesskid you got some good metal bands =]
Big D, with the possible exception of their first and latest album, have hardly any ska songs whatsoever. They're much more thrash/punk/maybe skacore.
I hope you also heavily dislike the Mighty Mighty Bosstones because they have pretty much the same distinction.
the difference between big D and the bosstones is that the bosstones don't sound like they're too lazy to learn past the basics of playing their instruments there i said it.
edit: don't get me wrong, i love a lot of the acts you posted, but big d reeks of effortlessness. yes, even for a punk band.
while ill agree that shot by lammi definitely shows a musical immaturity, try listening to strictly rude or how it goes and then tell me that
[edit] in the words of the immortal voodoo glow skulls, "hey man we dont have no rehearsals man, besides its just punk rock man, you know, you dont have to know how to play all you just gotta do is be a punk, man, we can do that"
[edit2] also big d is probably one of the hardest working bands today, they play a show literally almost every single day of the year and their live show is absolutely just exploding with energy
speaking out of having heard in full shot by lammi, good luck, gypsy hill and how it goes I stand by what I think. naturally, I have not heard the new album. but then, my mentality about ska these days mainly consists of if you're listening to third wave, why bother with anything that isn't streetlight manifesto so excuse the bias.
edit: fifteen > skulls in immortality rating
a) streetlight isnt nor does it remotely resemble third wave ska
b) try listening to the new album, its almost a complete departure from the older thrash stuff. a lot of people who never used to like big d are big fans.
also if youre listening to third wave but ignoring bands like the slackers i really dont know what to say to you
sorry to take this ska-fest in a completely different direction but... recommend me some dub and electronica!
