That’s ridiculous. How is it any different from just having people over for dinner every Thursday? They couldn’t restrict that, so it’s just based on the fact that they’re talking about God?

Edit: O_L it’s being held in a pastor’s home, and I don’t see why holding a Bible Study group in your home would be a problem anyway.

Also apparently in the updated article the city already apologized and rescinded the order, so hey.

Somehow I think that site might be a little bit biased. The permit they’re being asked to obtain is for parking and sidewalk regulation compliance, so if they’ve got a bunch of cars on a residential street every week, that can probably pose a bit of a problem. It doesn’t look like we’ve got the whole story, though.

edit: Hey guys, guess what? It doesn’t matter now. The city admits it was wrong, everyone is happy.

And this is probably a case of the police misreading the law or extrapolating it too far. They’re college students, they’re there on their own free will, and they can leave if they want to. The only thing I could see wrong with this is if the couple were charging money to attend the sessions, because then it would be like having mandatory donations at a church, and I’m pretty sure that’s illegal.

The apology letter linked to from the news article I posted says that the Officer who did the interrogating acted on “unclear language” in the zoning laws. And the council response linked on the same page says the concern was over 7 or 8 additional cars parked along the side of the road.

So to me it looks like an overly strict officer who carried out his questioning in the wrong way, leading to massive overreactions over something really minor.

There were no noise violations reports from what I read, and the people were parked on the street legally (which is why the citation was dropped, with a suggestion that the people park on the pastor’s lot or utilize public transportation rather than park on the street to make more room for others to park). So either you didn’t read the article and other documents, or you’re such a militant anti-Christian that you didn’t feel the need to before you drew conclusions and skewed the report. Good for you. If it was a problem of noise and parking, then why did they tell them that they needed a major use permit? Major use permits for San Diego are for architecture and engineering of “major use” facilities. Examples that require a major use permit in San Diego are things like deviating from an approved design, digging a drainage pit, providing a location for group care, beginning new construction, and time extensions on construction time limits. Here’s a list: http://www.co.san-diego.ca.us/dplu/zoning/majorusepermit.html

Since there was no construction happening, then why didn’t they simply issue parking/zoning/noise level fees?

Honestly, you do need a permit to do most anything in America. You need a permit to protest, even.

I don’t see why people think this is such a travesty. If anything, making it so people need permission to teach religion is a good thing, because then we might have less priests/pastors that are racist/molest children/misogynist. (Not saying they [priests/pastors] all are as Emily might assume, but saying that there have been priests who are all/some of the above and no one can deny that.). As much as it is against the first amendment to restrict the freedom of religion, there are penalties about Hate speech, and religion very well should be monitored as many religious leaders have used their religion to spread hatred, including the Pope. Besides, it’s not like anyone is denying them the right to get a permit. It’s as simple as seeing if you’re qualified, and if you’re not qualified for the job, then do the world a favor and stay out of the practice. After all, we don’t let doctors without licenses operate on people, we shouldn’t let Pastors without some course on civility teach a mind-altering process.

Honestly, Emily, I may have missed that article because I don’t like reading your posts.
But after having read it, my point remains sound except for that last scentence. Obviously, the police had to have been called because of a disturbance. The cops probably wouldn’t have arrested them otherwise (because cops aren’t necessarily motivated to issue out permit charges without a disturbance issue.)

Also, no: religion is different from philosophy in that it is purposefully driven to serve the goals of a God. In that same way, people who teach a cult should be forced to take a permit, as they might intentionally steer people into doing misdeeds. I used to think the same thing, that Religion is the same as Philosophy. But people don’t treat it the same way. Philosophy doesn’t have that sort of power over a person, as it merely suggests a life style change, where as a religion can force someone through fear.

They were called because someone complained that there were too many cars parked on the street, as I understand it. What I was arguing is that the officer involved was confused as to what the people needed (parking violation as opposed to major use permits). I’m not arguing that they were badgering them for their religion, just that it was gone about in the wrong way.

      sprite Mr. SmartyPants

      Odori, I disagree.

“Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language.” Pretty much all religion encompasses these similar facets.

Likewise, one could argue that nearly any philosophical idea can be driven to serve the goals of the self.
