The apple of enlightenment

sprite Erostratus

I found this claim in a blog, about the Ness´s face you see in Giygas´s lair:

“Due to a mistranslation, this face was never explained to US players, but the Japanese version of Earthbound, Mother 2, revealed that this “face” was the apple of enlightenment that is mentioned throughout the game as having given a prophecy telling Giygas to beware Ness.”

Is this true? because that would be really creepy.

I always thought the apple was that round central part of the devil’s machine, and Giygas used his own psychic powers to tap into it and see the future.

No, it’s not true. The Japanese game does not explain things further than the English translation does in this aspect. I’m pretty sure this issue came up a month ago or so.

I’ve played M2 several times and I would’ve been all over this had it been true. It sounds like one of those rumors that keeps spreading around, similar to the rumor that the demon baby story is from a book Itoi wrote, when in fact it isn’t.

I’ve always wondered what that “Apple of Enlightenment” is… Gosh, Itoi sure loves to keep things vague…

I dunno what he said exactly, so I can’t say. It’s possible that he’s talking about another one of his really complex theories based on vague evidence.

      sprite Sir Ilpalazzo

I guess he was wrong then. In this case, he claimed that the speech at the end of Magicant directly stated that the Apple of Enlightenment was a prophecy machine that was being used by the forces of evil.

At least now I know not to use that in arguments anymore.

Because that never happened I highly doubt that he stated that specifically. I don’t recall him ever saying is specifically, either, so I dunno. Perhaps I missed that particular theory though. Do you have a link to it?

        sprite Sir Ilpalazzo

          I’ll try to find it.

But I’m pretty sure he said something like “people playing the English version missed out on this, because the Apple wasn’t supposed to be left a mystery”. I’ll try and find it, but I wish the search engine went back farther.

          EDIT: Here.

The Apple of Enlightenment seems to me as though it is the Psychic Power itself, and tapping into it as a source of knowledge allows an ambitious, but powerful, psychic to learn of future events.

I don’t know what the apple of enlightenment is—though when I saw the face at that part, I always thought it was a reflection of ness-you know, the metal covering being so shiny it reflected your image.

Edit: I have just realised, thanks to Chrismith, that you where a robot and thus it could not be a mirror, and thus this post makes no sense.

              Actually, it does say

              ギーグの持っている予言マシン「知恵のリンゴ」は
               ギーグのたくらみが失敗に終わると告げたんだ。

Meaning it’s most likely a prophecy machine, but I’ve heard マシン used for non-machine things too (one thing that comes to mind is Goku’s flying cloud). Whatever the case, it’s some kind of physical object that does stuff. What it is, what it does, where it came from, what happens to it… all that is still a mystery though, and I doubt Giygas’ swirling faces are it.

              sprite Abidon

ah, I see. And Chrismith-I completely forgot ness was a robot. Do to my own stupidity, would someone downvote my post?

In my vision of EarthBound, it’s just like a crystal ball, except it’s shaped like an apple – and Giygas sees Ness and co.’s victories in the crystal ball, which is what makes him so scared of Ness for most of the journey. And Ness probably reminds him of Ninten or something.

No problem Abidon – downvoting people for fun is my specialty.

Jokes aside, the apple of enlightenment being the machine that shows Ness’s face as a prophecy for what will foil giygas’s plans IS without a doubt THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT theory of Earthbound I’ve yet to hear, and theres a lot of good ones. It is most likely alien technology from Giegue’s beloved home planet from Mother 1. I always wondered what the apple was and why Ness’s face was on that machine. Now it DOES make sense. WOH AGREES?

              sprite Abidon

Officer: that’s a better idea then mine.:). I wonder if the apple of enlightinment wasn’t something in other games…or for some reason, a strange real-life prophecy. I’m pretty sure Tomatos where called some sort of apple..a love apple or something at one point, and Tomato is the one who translated Mother 3…wow. I wonder if Itoi predicted this all…..ok, that’s it. I gotta stop eating the advent calender chocolates, it’s making me come up with crazy theories.

Maybe the image was a reflection of someone’s memeries-maybe not Gigyas, but possibly Porky’s or ness’s memeries reflected onto the orb, kinda like that cave that reflected your thoughts?

Maybe, one can only speculate. I would wonder what that something was. The apple of enlightenment…I just have this idea myself that Buzz buzz recignised ness as a ‘typical teenage boy’, and decided that explaining things to him like he was a superhero was the only way to actually get him to go along with saving the world, “You where fortold by uh..uh…THE APPLE OF ENLIGHTENMENT—yeah, that’s it..the apple of enlightenment told me you where the legendery hero!”

Well, if I was confronted by a random talking insect, I probably wouldn’t believe a word he said unless he mentioned something that sounded important even though I have no idea what he’s talking about. And that’s why i’m not a legendery hero.

Actually, going over my copies of Buzz Buzz’s speeches, I don’t think he ever mentioned the Apple of Enlightenment. He did talk about a legend that had been passed down from ancient times, but no mention of the phrase itself.

It’s been awhile since I played, but I assumed it was him since I think I remember someone saying it in the beginning..maybe it was the Starmen though that mentioned it?

I personally wonder what kind of hero Buzz Buzz was..I really think Buzz buzz needs his own spinnoff. As well as the Mr. Saturns. And Boney.

No, the only ones ever to mention it are Starman DX, Ness’s mind, and Porky.

Now that (part of) what Giovanni said is confirmed, I personally think it’s not really all that mysterious. It’s a prophecy-telling thing that Gyiyg has. Do we really need to know anything else?

Sorry to go a bit religious on this topic but do you think the idea of Apple of Enlightenment could be related somehow to the story of Adam and Eve because the forbidden fruit gave them knowledge?

                    Maybe very loosely.

I think apples are just an object associated with “knowledge” in general. Apple trees bear fruit that sow seeds that lead to further apple trees, metaphorical to the way ideas spread through humans.

Apples are given to teachers, fall on scientist’s heads, etc.

                    Hence Apple Kid.

                    sprite Abidon

even so, people question if the ‘apples’ they ate where apples-since tomatoes where also called apples of love or something at that point. I’m starting to question more and more of the, “Itoi predicted Tomato and the Starmen.net website and Mother 3 Fanfiction” theory I came up one night when I couldn’t fall asleep…but somehow, I doubt that my theory has any truth to it.

Maybe Itoi picks a random food? He seams to like to name things after food-his dog’s name is Bouillon witch is a type of soup, Apple kid, Orange kid, and Boney for example. I’m probably pulling at straws hear though.
