A friend suggested I do this in September and I signed up eagerly. I’ve had an idea for what to write about since about the beginning of October that I’ve really wanted to write, but have staved off the urge to do so since the website advised to not write at all until Nov. 1st and I figure it’ll be more fun that way. Either way, I’m really looking forward to Nov. 1st.

Hrmm, I am actually considering taking part in this if I have any spare time (job, university etc have a wonderful way of destroying my spare time). I’ve never attempted to write before but a deadline as well as other participants is probably a good incentive for people to actually produce something.

Only thing is I suppose writing a novel requires a lot of research (and an actual idea x_x) so maybe I arrived a little late.

Yeah, Jatopian, but the main thing about NaNoWriMo is the fact that people go “OH GAWWWWD, I can’t write a NOVEL it’s TOO HARD because I can’t ever write because it’s SO HARD and I’ll never be like (insert famous writer here) so why even BOTHER BAWWWW”, so now these people can just throw stuff onto a computer and say “hey, at least I wrote it down”.

Then later, you’re supposed to go over it and make it better. In fact, I think there’s a branch off of NaNoWriMo during the December month to go over your novel, finish it up, make it look better, blahblahblah.

In fact, I did NaNoWriMo last year and never showed anyone the story because I knew it sucked so bad. Maybe this year I’ll work on it during December and try and have it make it past rough draft stage. Hmmm…

When you start me up, I never stop.

It may surprise you to discover I’m still trying for my first win on my fourth year. That’s because the first year I tried to go it alone and bombed out after two weeks, the second year my book became an in-depth discovery of the post-millennium condition (though I’m still working on it to this day,) and last year I wrote my book entirely by hand on cue cards, 100 words at a time. This year, no insane ideas, no dadaist dictionary-skimming, and no pen-and-paper. I gots me a laptop and a straightforward fantasy plot about a dragon and a unicorn and a gryphon. Plus I got all my fancy-pants crazy stuff out of the way when I did 3-Day. This is the year, baby.

Loppington: when will you ever have spare time, though? ;D They make this point on their FAQ: for 98% of the population, there’s always going to be something on the list ranking higher than “write a novel.” Nanowrimo forces you to put that crap aside for an hour or so every day while you bust out 1,700 words. And the great thing about the no-expectation approach is that it requires no research at all; you can write that the world is square and hamburgers eat people, just as long as it gets you to 50K in thirty days.

Jato: ordinarily, yes, quality is the key metric for the Terry Pratchetts and Simon Roberts of the world. But that’s because for guys like us, it’s an actual job that pays the bills (well, it’ll pay someday in my case.) For everyone else, it’s merely a life-affirming exercise in motivated creativity for self-fulfillment. It’s sort of like running a marathon: not everyone is out there to win the race, and in fact the vast majority are measuring themselves on an alternate metric such as their personal best. Fifty thousand is just a nice round number that’s longer than a novella and shorter than a good-sized novel; it keeps everybody on the same page in terms of pacing and targets.

A question for those who’ve tried this before: what’s your quota, generally, per day? I’m looking at trying for about 2000+ words a day, that gives me some leeway to not write on a weekend where I can take some time off and do something else, but I dunno if that’s unreasonable or not.

So excited for this still.

Fanfiction’s okay. The rules are to pump out 50,000 words. That’s it.

Hell, my first novel here was EBA fic. Which is one of the reasons why people asked if I was going to publish it I said “LOL NO”.

But yeah, now I’m ready to try something more original~ =D

My story’s a parody of olden day RPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Hopefully it will be “original” in design and story though so it won’t sound like a muck of idiocy. I’ll be sure to show updates and excerpts of the story on my userthingie~

Everyone: if you’re only at 15K right now, then I hereby grant you the right to aim for 25K as your final score. That’s as much as I was able to do the last two years running, too, and if you keep workin’ on it right up until the finishing line, then next year (or next time you do something like this) you’ll be able to remember what it’s like hitting the hardware for thirty days straight.
