The Fan Game! *We're baaack!*

duo

Dave, it’s fine that you want to learn how to make games. But it’s not fine that your team is building up a lot of hype about mother 4 by starting facebook pages, accepting loads of fan contributions, and making official looking websites. It’s wrong and very irresponsible. The impression you’re giving is that you will soon deliver a game that’s worth being called mother 4. What’s going to happen a year from now when you finally realize how much work putting together a game is? You simply won’t be able to deliver. And what’s going to happen to the fan contributions?

Cave story is the only complete rpg I know of that was written from scratch, and it took 5 years to put together. By a Japanese. Adult. Professional programmer. Where are you guys going to be in 5 years?

Prove me wrong.

The State of Utah is a degenerate, blasted intellectual wasteland, and I pity everyone unfortunate enough to be stuck there, and scorn everyone involved in its continued fall into babbling idiocy.

I mean, who are you to bash these guys making such a great effort? Where’s your professional-looking fangame?
Jeez, if anything i’ll be satisfied with this hype and the fact that someone did at least this great of a job so far.

Like Chris Crocker would say… Leave Mother 4 alone!

At the risk of sounding like I agree with duo, I don’t like the Facebook idea. You already have your own website, isn’t that enough? But whatever, it exists now, I have the ability to ignore it, and I could be entirely wrong anyway.

The one and only?

sprite Zephys

The facebook page is just a bit of publicity. It won’t entirely change the direction of Mother 4, or anything of the sort. We had a few requests, and promptly responded with "Eh, why not?"

Prove me wrong.

*Puts on sunglasses*

You got a deal.

Also, I’d like to point out that the majority of Starmen.net would find you much less credible since the only posts you’ve ever made are in this thread, generally for the purpose of causing trouble, going off-topic, etc.

My credibility is inconsequential; it is irresponsible to lead people on, and encourage them to do things for you when you’re not yet prepared to make a game. I’ve already offered help with programming and structure twice before. I’m still offering help, but programming in c++ is a huge waste of effort, and there is really no work of this type be done anyway:

‘’Chase and I just need to get off our butts, finalize the story, and then put together all the maps, enemies, items, etc.’’

The whole thing is stalled, and there are no real updates except fan updates and facebook pages. Why are you making facebook pages instead of working on the game?! I offered help because of all the fan content, but nothing will happen at this rate.

I’m sure you are now encouraged to get working a little harder, and hopefully smarter too ,when it comes to c++. I really hope to play mother 4 someday.

    sprite konchaku

It might not be my place to say this but, it all sounds like you are whining because they turned down your offer to help.If the project is stalled or moving, it’s their problem to fix. And you need to remember they need to port the things for the new engine, so it’s not like they can work on everything of the game at the same time.

I don’t have facebook, but I don’t think making a page for it and updating it will take more than some minutes when needed. It’s not like they use every single moment of their free time to make the game, so you have no right to reprimand them for using their free time as they like.

They are making the game because they want to, and not because they have some sort of responsability with us. Their choices are theirs alone to make, and if they irate you, you can just get away from here.

It will be ready when it is, doesn’t matter how much time takes, and if you can’t accept what they are doing or wait until the game progress to a stage where they can reveal more information, it’s better for you to stop checking this community, since it will all end in worhtless topic stalling banter like this.

Anyway, this game looks promissing and I’m happy to hear it’s progressing. It would be sad to see this project being dropped or entering a hiatus. And sorry for the rant I gave to duo.

    sprite Zephys

    Hiss, hiss.

*Holds up "Double tap R to avoid the incoming walls of text!" Sign*

Because facebook pages take 3.5 minutes to make, and making worthy content that is likely to be checked over, remade, checked over again, checked to make sure it’s content we want the public to see at this point, confirm that it’s in it’s final state of being, or very very near it’s final state of being, having all (or most) members of the team NOT see a problem with said content being released, and finally, put together in a presentable form and still unpublished, is a much more painful and intricate process.

The Facebook page was an obvious yes when the question was presented to the team as a whole, though I personally, rarely use it, and despise society’s obsession with it.

Beyond that, do we want to nitpick over ONE little thing for hours on end, or just keep working on the actual product, which will shock and awe all, but especially nay-sayers, upon release?
That explained, consider the updates we do give to our fans, whom we do adore greatly, more or less, a favor, considering there is much to be done.

And no, the game will not be released soon. That is because it will be released when it has been absolutely decided that it’s each and every aspect will be pristine, and truly what we, and hopefully our fans, would hope and expect to see in a true Mother 4.

Mother 4 is not on hiatus, and while some aspects may have slowed (which would be in my department, admittedly), others, such as Dave’s department, are flying along at speeds you would expect from a team of professionals.

Today, I am sitting down with Dave while he busts down a whole chunk of what the engine needs to have done, where there will be questions, reviews, more reviews, and consequently, more questions that need answering, and a review concerning their answers.

And then, today perhaps, but soon nonetheless, the same will happen to a new chapter of the story that answers questions that otherwise would have, unanswered, caused a plothole in the story, which will call for some numbers to be changed, since we are toying with the actual balance a bit now.

We’re working. We’re sorry if the random individual doesn’t like ____ aspect of the way we’re doing it.

Personally, I would be offended at what this team is doing from an outside view. I’ll be honest. "Who do these nobodies think they are?" I would say, and there would be much hiss, hissing, though I would not bother to post it on the internet. To think that a team of three to seven youths could create a true Mother 4 is dreaming.
I daresay, the dream is coming true. That is why I support, and work tirelessly on, this project. Upon release, I pray that all who will give this game a chance will understand. We entitle this project "Mother 4", not because we are foolishly ambitious, and not because we crave attention. We are making Mother 4 because we want one, and we personally are making it, because we are up to the task.

    *lowers sign*

That said, I would say Konchaku’s lengthy post is certainly excused.

    Beautifully put, Mr. Zephys.

Duo, I wouldn’t say there’s anything wrong with having a professional website, they’re just trying to make every aspect of the game quality, naw mean? Besides, they’re allowed to make a Facebook page, these people have lives, dontchaknow? They’re not going to spend every waking second working on the game. Also, it’s funny how you just make random claims, what makes you think they’re not ready to make a game?A nd I love how you randomly pop out with “The whole thing is stalled.” You… You know this?

Then again, your choice of words seem to be out of tough love of some sort.

Like the really angry army guy who yells at the kids at the boot camp, and all the kids at the boot camp are like “This guy sucks!” but then at the end the kids at the boot camp turn out strong and do something amazing, and the really angry army guy takes off his sunglasses, smiles, and says “Always works… Heheheh… Always works…”

    Maybe.

    sprite bentheindividual

:O Too much text! And I’m playing with an NES controller, so there is no R button!

Seems to me that if they didn’t keep doing things like that so fans could keep in touch, then fans would start ignoring them. As for the rare releases, professionals do that too. Remember “Zelda Wii”?

By the way, if a man yells loud enough, he can’t necessarily do anything (despite what Darrow might say). Duo, put your money where your mouth is. You can’t program. Prove me wrong.

I would like to second what has been said (Kill ’em, Zeph-man!:D), and maybe shed a little light on the subject.
We decided to make a Facebook for a few appropriate reasons:
    1. To eliminate any confusion that would have been caused by the Mother 4 impostor page on Facebook. Because rly gaiz!!thts totalie mee
    2. To add another place for the premature fans to conglomerate and show their support. Because why not?

Oh, and one last thing, the second I’m working on a game that involves an income is the second I lose my life to it. That is all.
PS. Duo, don’t insult Dave’s programming ability. From what I’ve seen out of you, he could program circles around you.

This has potential, but I’m sort of disappointed with a few things. I’ve been playing the rest of the series very comfortably. I played EB0 on my NES in english (rewritable NES cart), I played earthbound on my SNES, and I played Mother 3 in english on my gameboy micro (rewritable GBA cart). Essentially, I’ve played all of the games like I would any other, despite the series’ Japanese exclusivity. And while most people emulated EB0 and Mother 2, and almost everyone with Mother 3, I won’t be looking forward to having to play this on my computer. Second, just use earthbound music. I listened to what you’ve given us, and while it’s a noble effort, and captures the same instruments and sounds of Mother, it doesn’t get the feel at all.

Take all of this with a grain of salt; what I’ve seen is very impressive, keep up the good work!

    sprite Dylan Yoshi

Duo does make a good point; most projects that are hyped up like this turn out to be a letdown, like that Zelda fan movie. However, there is not a shred of evidence to suggest that this will turn out like that, and everything seems to point towards this being great.

    sprite shafersaysmeh

Quite frankly the only thing i care about is the final release, any of the hyping, bashing, or trolling just doesn’t effect how the game will actually play.

It’s just a fan game. Chaisu, Zephys, SNOBODYS and myself are making a game called “Mother 4.” It’s not official or anything, and not a fan translation. As for a release date, we don’t have one. If you want to know more, check out the FAQs section on the blog.

On the note of a new screenshot, there isn’t much to show since I’m still rewriting the engine. We haven’t posted anything new lately because of that.
