Mr. Saturn sprite EB in Spanish mostly done! Last touches...

sprite TurboNess

We are sorry for the wait. We have been a little bit busy with our lives and we have been postponing the translation quite a bit, but now it's mostly done. The translation project is real, and we are done with the script file that Tomato offered in the French translation topic. IT WORKS... mostly. We will explain now the progress that we have:

-Normal text is done. What we refer as "normal" text is the text that doesn't have anything to do with events. So this means that all NPCs speak in Spanish.

-Items, menus, ATMs and "shops" are done too. BUT, they have these problems: A) The game may think that items exceed needed text, and in result may omit a row, which is solved easily sorting your bag. B) When you are buying weapons, it seems that the game puts the dialogue window behind the shop menu, so when you buy the weapon, it's better to just exit the shop menu and equip it yourself. It's only with EQUIP items, nothing else. C) We are missing some texts: PSI Descriptions and the When?, Where? (the little boxes at the corners)

-Name and Battle text are done. BUT: A) It seems that the game seems to like to put a 0 after everyone's name for some reason. B) The "the" text is not in the script, so all is refered as "the" in battle. Not outside battles. C) Names using "No importa" will show in Spanish there, but not ingame, so after seeing the translation, you should write it normally. D) Missing texts are: Runaway Five, Mu training, final battle dialogue (minus the speech after 1st fight, but not before 2nd fight) and when "damaging" the final boss. AND the "miss" text (when you fail an attack) with the death text, but it seems to work with F.Men.

-Event text is done. This is the part that needs more work: A) Events where something pops up won't show up in Spanish, this includes telephone talks WITH Ness. B) We miss Mu training, Runaway Five after battle, Your Sanctuary texts, Liar X. Agerate text when running in the tunnel, Buzz Buzz in the hill and against Jr. C) This doesn't really pertain here but is something special: when using Escargo Express, DON'T take out items when speaking with Tracy in your home. This MESSES the game A LOT. The real cause is unknown, but if you continue tapping "A" the game will make weird noises and eventually, the speech against the final boss will pop and will initiate battle. The result is obvious.

And this is it. We will now offer the actual script and our screen captures. We are just fans that are trying to make something to cater new fans, we make this request. To the person that sent us a private message, sorry for not having answered before. We only logged that day that we made the topic and then we have not been able to log again. :p

    Now the images:

And finally the script. And well, that's all. We need help. We know that it's not polite, but that's all that we can do. We know that you don't have to do OUR work, but we are stuck. We only need the fixes and the missing texts and we do the translation. Thank you in advance and sorry for our bad English, it's not our MOTHER language.

EDIT: Fixed some things that sounded WRONG, added the forgotten battle text

    sprite blueblue2

      Well done.

      sprite TurboNess

        Thank you for your support

In case that we don't have the missing texts in a month, we are going to make a file with the missing story texts so players can complete EB and know the story 100%. We made the translation with SSBBrawl in our heads, and as there is only two months to be released in Europe, we have to launch it already. We will do the patch then and release it. The sad thing is that we can't do a Mother3 translation so people know Lucas (unless Tomato makes a script like this again)

        sprite Rcade

Wow, it looks great. Good job.

I hope someone with PK Hack skills can help you out soon. (I just spent an hour trying to figure out how to place doors)

-Items, menus, ATMs and "shops" are done too. BUT, they have these problems: A) The game may think that items exceed needed text, and in result may omit a row, which is solved easily sorting your bag.
? Like, names are too long? I guess that's no good, i'd just try to work around it by naming the weapons something else. Although that kind of strays from the original, you may want to do it so it looks more professional.
            B) When you are buying weapons, it seems that the game puts the dialogue window behind the shop menu, so when you buy the weapon, it's better to just exit the shop menu and equip it yourself. It's only with EQUIP items, nothing else.
Odd, you may have messed up a code somewhere.
            A) It seems that the game seems to like to put a 0 after everyone's name for some reason.
? Sounds like another case of overwriting code, explain more.
            B) The "the" text is not in the script, so all is refered as "the" in battle. Not outside battles.
Oh, like if something is genderless? My guess is that it's somewhere embedded before the text code lines, which blows. I wish I knew how to find and edit something like that, but i'm not that great.
            C) Names using "No importa" will show in Spanish there, but not ingame, so after seeing the translation, you should write it normally.
Like the "Don't Care" names? That's odd, that doesn't normally happen.
-Event text is done. This is the part that needs more work: A) Events where something pops up won't show up in Spanish, this includes telephone talks WITH Ness.
Odd, all of the text in game is in the Text editor, aside from small things like "the" and "PSI".
            B) We miss Mu training, Runaway Five after battle, Your Sanctuary texts, Liar X. Agerate text when running in the tunnel, Buzz Buzz in the hill and against Jr.
Well, you seem to be missing a lot of text. A good way to find it is play the original and take a part of the dialogue and search for it in the text editor.
            Sounds like overlapping code.

Well, most of your issues sound like overlapping text or some glitch. Don't worry, glithes like that happen to me too when i'm hacking. For example, I try to add more choices for tiles and randomly the entire tileset's settings for what you can/can't walk on turn into garbage. It's a pain and you typically have to revert back. I find it odd that you're having issues with the translation on coding, since there seems to be more than enough room on the ROM for it. If you just don't have enough room for some things, i'd suggest just expanding the ROM and if a translation for an event/dialogue takes up too much room, move it there and have anything that used to refer to it moved to that line. I had to do that for the ATM line, since I switched it from being a machine to being a person.

I know I didn't help too much but at least it's somewhat in the right direction.

TurboNess, I'd like to help you but I don't understand Spanish. Would it be possible to list the addresses (like C74C07 or 0x74e07) that you're having problems with or won't appear (like the Runaway Five, Mu training, etc)? This would make it easier to track down the problem.

            sprite Bouysel

Hey TurboNess, if you need help I can (try) to help you. I'm fluent in spanish, so I could proofread the game.

              sprite TurboNess

Thanks for your support again. Still, it seems that you think that I made the script. That is not true. I just translated it. The script was made by Tomato, who posted it saying that it could be an alternate easier method for making text based only hacks and translations. This was posted originally in a French translation project. By that time, we were making a translation via PkHack, but as we had problems with pointers, we decided to check the boards for help or tutorials and then found that topic. We downloaded the files posted and decided to work with that, which was way easier. This should explain most of the glitches that appear: some of the entries may be wrong. Though, I will work more with the item names. It seems, after some check, that items have the same limits as PKHack, because some items with longer names won`t glitch, while some with shorter do glitch. I will post the other files that I used later. And I will check the entries that don`t work and post them too (thanks Mr. Tenda).

And a last question about M3 without spoilers, but that you will understand. Should I name HIM the original or the new way? Here in Europe didn`t get EB, so I think it wouldn`t mind name him the new way, right?

                sprite Raevmu

one day I'll be cool and I'll have a rank

I'm so happy! Thank you for spreading EB to all Spanish speaking people... more for our cause! I don't speak it, but truly, this is up there with Martin Luther translating the Bible to German.

                  sprite TurboNess

Well, I think that it's about time I make another post :p

My computer finally blew up after his 11 years of service that provided me, so I had to buy another one. Still, I was able to move all files to the new, so no worries. But, from now on, I am the only person involved in the project. My partner is too busy trying to publish a home brew game (he draws all graphics) so we decided it would be best if he left the project, at least for a while (even though I made most of the translation, he helped me to understand how the script worked) This DOESN'T mean I am leaving, I am continuing this until the end (or at least I will try)

From the last time, I have been trying to fix the Items problem with the menu. After shortening some item names (without making them unreadable) it seems that all items will fit in the menu screen, thus now there is no problem selecting them. Now Elnendil will be happy (just joking)

I am replaying the game again so I know EXACTLY the moments when something goes wrong. When I finish it I will post the pointers that don't seem to work with the script and what it's missing (along with the glitches) So this new list isn't as rushed as the other one

In the last post I made I made a question about "someone" and M3. I made up my mind and I will retain the old name, as a magazine from Spain just made a homage to the Mother series and mentioned that character on it the old way (along with spoiling people his appearance in M3 :p )

I will now post some the tools I am using to make this, so you can see yourselves the translation LIVE They are:

The script with his last update, the .exe used to insert the script along with the .bat used (the original name was scriptread.bat, I don't know why I changed it) and the .ips that contains the font (but it doesn't have ¿ and ¡ on it. Oh well)

Well, I am going to play some EB. I will come back with more news some other time. Oh, and to the last post, there is something more important than translating the Bible to German, and it's translating EB to German! (joking again, but it seems that someone already made it, someone whose user name I think was Spade, but I don't know where it's hosted)

Cool stuff You might want to just make a patch though, it'd be easier for people to take a look at it.

Also, if you can get most of the game to work correctly, then you should make a patch out of it. From there, you can fix script bugs using PK Hack's text editor by manually changing pointers. I think that should work. Except PK Hack doesn't work with those extra non-English letters... So actually, never mind my idea just now. The pointers can still be fixed manually though.

OMG. Brilliant. Earthbound in spanish? WHODUNIT?

I KNEW I was going to be answered today, I did well checking again the posts

Oh, I should have thought about making a patch, I don't know what I was thinking  Well then, you will have not one, but TWO patches: One for header-ed "games" and another for the ones without it, just if something went wrong. Enjoy them, but mind you that it's not 100% translated. Oh, and don't speak directly with your sister, because she will MESS the game. Use the phone instead.

About PKHack, we tried it before, but the text in the Main Text disappeared leaving only the translation script, though the Raw Text was intact, so yeah, it would not work anyway :p .

By the way (to Tomato), I don't want you to delay more M3  but, do you know something about the status of the french translation (where I got the tools) and if he (or you) got the missing texts? Also, it would be great if we could host the European (german, french and spanish) translations here, as we don't have any fanmade web here (well, I don't know any :p ) I don't know spanish it would be legal, though. Oh, and thank you.

And now, good night sirs, it's 2:00 AM here...

Sure, I can add the foreign language translations to the site. Do you want this patch up, though? Do you want lots and lots of people to test it? I can link this thread from the M3 blog and I assure you you'll have plenty of testers. Except most people don't understand what testing really is. But I think it should be helpful. I'll give people a link here anyway and they can post any buggy text here for you.

EDIT: And no, I've heard nothing from the French translator. Not for a long time. But I think we can fix your problems easily, I think I know one cause for problems. But in most cases, we can manually move lines without much trouble. But once we start moving lines, we can't use those translation tools anymore. So be very careful and be sure you're ready to move to the bug-fixing stage.

                        sprite paisapk

this is cool i just started playing and i've just noticed that this is translated into a south american spanish one of the things that bothered me was when Ness' dad calls and Ness has to pick up the phone when you pick it up it says "Ness cogio el telefono" (something like that) to me i think that sounds hilarious but it might offend people who speak Castellano (which is the spanish spoken in mexico) a more friendlier term would be "contesto" or "recogio"

and another thing when you battle against an enemy you should use "Al" not "A" ('Al' sounds more like 'to the')

but furthermore, keep up the good work i'll keep on testing it and give you some tips about other type of Spanish

edit just noticed that "cogio" is used a lot =O! i think you should use "consiguio" (which is spanish for 'got')

I just wanted to come in and wish you guys luck. This is an important project and I'm surprised it hasn't been attempted before. Best of wishes!

It would be really great, thank you very much. But there is still some text missing (mentioned in the first posts), so if we can't go back once the bug-fixing starts it's a problem :p . And all the text that there is in the script is already translated (even if some don't show up, as said before), so there is nothing else to do with it, so yes, I think this is ready to go What it is a pity it's that the French translator didn't continue, that way we could have known if he had the same bugs I am having, and that makes one language less too for a possible "European" release (but maybe it's not one language less, because I now remembered that there was also an Italian translation going on, but with PK Hack) All that being said, I don't know how this script it's not more used, I found it much easier to use than PK Hack (well, I mean in text hacks only)

So go on, let's spread some MOTHER love  . I just hope that this can take off and then be finished, it would be sad if at this point it lol to stay like this :p Let us see what turns out of this, there is nothing to lose

                              To the other two posts:

Thank you for your support. And yes, I don't know why I, lol complete beginner in this, was the only person to come up with the idea of translating EB. I mean, this just started having a conservation with my (ex)partner in the project about how it would be cool if he could play the game in Spanish, because he wanted to know what was about, and I mentioned PK Hack. Two days later, I found myself translating this, when I had never did something like this before  And after more than 10 years after EB's release, I also don't know why not anyone had this done. Maybe they forgot EB because they were too busy with the EB's games :p

South american? Whoa, you are wrong  This translation is done with the "castellano" from FFantasy. I don't know why you think that, but hey, it's true that I made one or two people speak with some "accents", but I think that they are in Summers! Also, we use "coger" for mostly everything, including "coger el teléfono". Why you are seeing "coger" when you get an item, it's because they use the same line (thus, "Ness cogió XX") I used the same line with the phone, even if it's other line, because they use the same "Ness picked up the telephone". And about "al", when you encounter "la señora mayor" tell her she is a he :p . You will get a shopping bag in the face  . Also, every enemy that uses a name, like Frank, would be read as "Al Frank" which is just wrong :p . But thank you for your contribution, one of the things we will try to solve it's that "the" seems to be on it's own way, but it's not in the script (at least, not that "the", the items were labeled with "el/la" to avoid gender problems, which I hope to use too)

                              And lastly, some more screens:

And well, the Argentinan are more "castellanizados" than most South Americans when they speak (here in Spain there are quite a few) so I understand your point.

Hey, I knew NOTHING about this project. It's great that more people who don't understand English will be able to play this game, like my brother.

Uhmmm, but, wouldn't it be better if you made a "neutral Spanish" translation. Because, really, words like "cogió", and "zumo" are, well, too Spanish (from Spain, you know) to my taste.

Another option is to make a different translation for Latin America, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

BTW, if you need help with the translation, I'm here.

I say the same thing like the above poster, maybe a Latin translation could be done also.

If you need help on a latin translation you a Latin here who could help you :p

Well, if you want to make a latin american translation, go ahead. The thing it's that there it's a lot of text, and changing all the Spanish words to their latin american counterparts it's quite an odyssey, not to mention that there are a lot of Spanish dialects in South America, so we then would need to make like 3 or more versions

I made it in Spain's Spanish because it's what it's considered the "standard" Spanish. And also because I am from Spain

By the way when i patched my "back up" with your patch i get a messy screen at the start and when i choose and option i get a beep sound or the screen goes black, is there any reason to this?

lol i had a feeling it used the same line but in english, doesn't ness 'pick' up the phone and when he gets an item he 'got' the item =S?

edit i really think you should put 'agarro' for 'cogio' (i insist to much, LOL) since 'Ness cogio' is a line for everything else it sounds OK with agarro i think =S 'Ness agarro el telefono' 'Ness agarro una Galleta' LOL

How about instead of Agarrar you use obtener? Ness obteno una galleta? Other spanish videogames I've played used Obtener in reference to items. And for the telephone, I agree with not using Coger, as it has dirty connotations. Why not use recojer?

Is this BLATANTLY Spain spanish? (which is the Spanish I speak!) Are you using the Vosotros conjugation and everything?

I'd love to help with the translation, but I have absolutely no hacking knowledge. Do I need this to help?

i haven't played the patch since my last post (like 2 days ago?) i'll rather play it when its complete =]

It would be "Ness obtuvo una galleta." Obtener is a irregular verb. I think, too, that "obtener" seems more neutral than "coger", and it also doesn't have sexual connotations.

Oh, and, actually, Spain's Spanish-speaking population is less than 10% of total Spanish-speaking population. Also, Spain's Spanish can be very different to Latin America's Spanish. If I had to choose a "standard" Spanish, I'd go with the Mexican one (and no, I'm not Mexican). Mexican, and maaaaaaybe Chilean translations are known from being "neutral". At least to Latin American audiences. The fact that people consider Spain's Spanish the standard one, is for cultural and social reasons, it's not related to the dialect itself.

If that doesn't work, you're probably doing something crazy like trying to apply a patch to a zip file or applying the patch to a non-clean ROM, etc.

YA AVISO: NO LEAIS A MENOS QUE YA SEPAIS EL FINAL DEL JUEGO EL ARCHIVO ADJUNTO.

^ Español v English (Not the same message, just the important parts)

Thanks for your support And after all, I too wouldn't have been able to do this without Tomato, because he made the tools.

Sorry not to tell you more, but it's because there isn't an advance... I am now replaying the game, trying to get the broken and missing lines for Mr.Tenda and whoever wants to help. And after all, I have a life and work

I also will put here the end texts, requested by Jfdp13, who played the game and found some "funny" glitches which I will post when I finish EB again, because he wanted to know it and also for every Spanish that ends the game. I don't have these texts, I am sure of it.

And also, thank you for the link to the "how-to-patch" site. I PM "Geno" about how to patch, but I should have just posted that. I need to think further...

                                                                            Attachments:

                                                                            sprite furrykef

Perhaps you should change Giygas's name? "Giygas" is already different from the original "Gyeeg" (Gyiyg), and spelling it that way in Spanish makes it likely somebody would pronounce it "Jigas". I'm partial to using the original "Gyiyg", since a Spanish speaker would actually know how to pronounce it, whereas an English speaker wouldn't.

By the way, I noticed that you always forget the accent mark in vosotros conjugations, almost every single time. It seems strange considering that you put it pretty much everywhere else. Also, you need one in the final sentence ("Me pregunto dónde está?").

I'll have to play it when it's done and when I have more time. Is there anything you need help with? I have some r0m hax0ring sk1LLz. For instance, I noticed that you don't use the characters ¿ and ¡... is this due to the font limitation? If so, I could see if there's anything I could do about it. (That'd mean a lot of ¿'s and ¡'s to insert, though...)

                                                                              - Kef

Hola TurboNess. He tenido un problemilla con tu traducción. Misteriosamente el fichero .ips ha desaparecido. No está en ningún “Attachment”. ¿Podrías resubirlo por favor? Gracias,
