DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSIONS OF PK HACK TOOLS HERE « PK Hack « Forum

This is an announcement we've been badly needing for a long time. Every now and then, someone will ask where to find some program or other, and then somebody tells them to go to the PK Hack website. As you all know, the PK Hack website gets updated about once every total solar eclipse, so sending people there to find current information and downloads is a bad idea. The official website probably won't be updated regularly until the new design and architecture is complete, which may be a little while yet.

So in the meantime, I'll make this topic.

JHack / PKHack

This is the central hacking utility, which can edit just about everything you need to in the EarthBound ROM. Created by AnyoneEB and contributed to by various persons like EBisumaru, Mr. Tenda, Dr. Andonuts, and many others. It's written in Java, so you might need to download Java in order for it to work.

Map Editor 4.6

This is the last version of the Map Editor 4.x line, which is the most recent functional build of the map editing tool by yours truly. I really, really have to recommend against using this one for now, since it tends to break a ROM's compatibility with JHack/PKHack, and Mr. Tenda's map editor (which is included in PKHack) can do almost everything mine can. Map Editor 5 will be functional enough to release sooner or later, but for now, just use PKHack.

Save State Editor

This is a handy tool that lets you edit the contents of a ZSNES EarthBound save state (*.zs* file). You can change names, stats, toggle event flags, and more.

SNES Patch Manager

This utility allows you to organize all your ROM patches into a handy database, and then play them with a single click whenever you wish. Once a patch (and a ROM it can be applied to) have been 'registered' with PatchMan, you can play the patch simply by double-clicking the .IPS file in Windows Explorer. Definitely useful if you have a lot of hacks lying around, and you're tired of having to constantly rename your ROM files, or make a new copy of a ROM for every patch.

Anything that lets you listen to the music without using the new Debug Menu. PK Hack Beta v. 03 doesn't have a music section. You may ask "Why the flurp are you using a Beta?" Well, I have Windows XP Home Edition, and the PK Hack site said Beta v. 03 wouldn't screw up on Windows XP.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Why the heck are you using PK Hack .3 beta?? That thing has been obsolete for, what, how many years now? Get the official, supported version of PKHack (formerly known as JHack). It's the very first program listed in this topic.

Mr. Accident already said that the PK Hack website is way out-of-date. It says that version 0.2 has trouble with Windows XP, and that the error is corrected in version 0.3 Beta. However, both of those versions are now long obsolete. The latest version works fine on Windows XP.

Excatly. The version of PK Hack that doesn't work with Windows XP (0.2) was made almost three years ago. Just get a recent version of PKHack from the links in my first post in this topic; the PK Hack website is horribly, terribly outdated; it will become reliable again once the new site goes up. Razz

The battle background editing functionality has implemented in much more consistent fashion in the Map Editor for ages now. (Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to be in JHack yet. *Hint hint :D*)

Someone COULD make a hack that people start with like as much as they would if they were level 85..and the skills..but that would be a lot to do.

The old website is old and dead. Please don't try to link to it unless you have to or there's something funny. It might have less info than the new site, but we aren't going to get or need any info if everybody keeps linking to the old site like it's alive. It was updated about three years ago.

Gah, I need to fix that bug. Either (1) run an older version of PK Hack first or (2) go to %userprofile%\.jhack\jhackPrefs.xml in NotePad (or your favorite text editor) and remove the spaces at the end of the file.

You left out quotes around the filename of the .jar. I am not clear how you are running JHack. If you are double-clicking it, then you need to change %1 to "%1" in the file associations.

I have an idea for how to export and import the Earthbound screen. Is it possible to make it so you export each frame manually and individually? It's a hassle, but I think it might work. You'd have 34 frames, 34 PNG images, for the Earth ound part and another 34 for the B part, making 64 frames. It shouldn't export/import all at once, just each one individually and manually. Is that possible?

Interesting idea, but I am not sure if that is possible. The screen is made up of the background with copyright notice and B, and then the separate letter graphics, along with an animated palette and descriptions of where the letters go. The current editor cannot edit where the letters go partially because I have yet to figure out how that actually works. It draws it correctly right now due to a minor hackish way of displaying the screen.

sparkydx: Yes, it would appear that the files are missing from AnyoneEB's site. Every download link for JHack leads to a 404 error...

I've attached the version of JHack that I have on my computer currently. However, it's a bit out of date - I have 0.5c1, and I think the latest version is either 0.5d or 0.5.13 or something like that. If somebody could post the most recent version, that would be great.

EDIT by AnyoneEB: Deleted not up-to-date JHack jar.
